If you're not a member of a private golf club, weekend golf in the Geneva region is difficult to find. To accomodate golfers who don't have the time or interest in joining an area private club, but would like to get in a round or two on weekends and some holidays of their choice, there is a Geneva based chapter of International Golf Associates. Although my husband Rob and I are already members at Divonne, we decided to join IGA in addition to our private membership due to the travel opportunities and discounted rates at regional courses such as Evian, Chamonix, Lavaux, Grenoble, Lyon, Annecy, Lausanne, etc.
The way IGA works is that for a $90.00 registration fee, you sign up as an IGA member of the Geneva Chapter under "Members - New Membership" at the English language website www.iga-golf.com. Then, under "Tournaments" you check out when, where, and which IGA members are playing each competition - ultimately deciding which ones to register for. From then on, all communication regarding tee times, directions, etc. is through the internet site and email.
My husband Rob and I have attended two IGA competition as guests - Once at Chamonix last season, and La Bresse this season. Although we are already members of Divonne, we've decided to join participate in IGA as well. We've found we really enjoy the organized, yet laid back friendliness of the IGA organizers and participants. The functioning language is English, and golf abilities range from novice to scratch - everyone is welcome. The word "competitions" is not meant to scare anyone off. the typical Stableford format is just a way to lend some structure and motivation to the round based on established or soon-to-be established handicaps.
If you're interested in joining the Geneva Chapter (there are other chapters based in Switzerland ie. Lausanne) of the International Golf Associates, there is more information at www.iga-golf.com. The sign-up list for the competitions is available; some are already filling up. This has been a looooooong winter!

Does anybody know of any "Pay & Play" courses around the Geneva area?
I'd like to play golf but I haven't got a handicap and I'm strictly a fair-weather golfer!!

Due to the special nature of Divonne's golf course being part of a resort, the course and the practice areas are public as well as private. Anyone can play there without being with a member (although that does give you a discount.) If you want to play on the weekends, member competitions may require that you play in the early morning or late afternoon. Weekdays are usually open.
2006 Pay and Play Rates
18 holes weekdays: 52 euros
9 holes weekdays: 36 euros
18 holes weekends and holidays: 85 euros
9 holes weekends and holidays: 59 euros
Electric buggy: 40 euros
www.domaine-de-divonne.com
Golf season has kicked off for me - I'm on the course or the practice facility every sunny day, so let me know if you'd like me to show you around.
Bon Weekend!
Michele

2006 Pay and Play Rates
9 holes : approx. 30 euros
Pratice : 5 Euros
5 holes practice for beginners : 12 Euros
Cool atmosphere and no handicap hassle for the 5 holes course !
A great way to learn !

Thanks.
We tried Les Serves and had a good 9 hole game. It's a bit waterlogged in places at the moment though. They didn't seem too fussy about handicaps or have a strict dress code either (I found out on the day that I hadn't packed my golf shoes!).

Dear Michele,
Is an official handicap a prerequisite for joining IGA, or can this be pursued once you've joined?
