Geneva Expenses!
I will potentially be moving to Geneva 2nd quarter this year for my job and after scouring the forums etc, I am not sure how much I should realistically budget for. I know there are cost of living calculators out there and my company will have their own calculations, but I like to do things myself and I want to go to the negotiation table with my own figures to ensure I can live a good lifestyle with worrying if I am spending too much money (i.e. be flat broke if I ever decide to leave). I know everyone's lifestyle is different so the more people who give me their input the better!

If you feel so inclined, I'd love to know what you spend on the following:

- Groceries per month

- Dinner for 1 person with a normal alcoholic intake

- Public Utilities per month (I can find the answer for Phone and Net online from the providers)

- Rent (I know this can have a big effect on where you live etc)

- Public Transport

- Anything Misc you might want to add?

Thanks a lot!

I find the prices in bars in Geneva are rediculous.. off license prices are pretty much the same as UK so don't understand the prices at bars and clubs...

Went to Arturs recently and paid 50chf for a kamikaze ???

Since I moved out of the center some months ago (and changed my lifestyle also a bit I can give you 'before and after' figures. Consider this: Before = Single person living on a small 2 bedrooms and kitchen appartment right in the center

Now: Couple living outside the center and have a more 'regular' life

- Groceries per month: depends on where you buy and when but as an indication

Before: 200 - 250, 300 chf if travelling in the weekend per week (consider that Geneva does not have a lot of 24/7 stores and if you are not there in the weekend or run out of something or just can't make it out of the office on time before shops close the 24/7 available are quite expensive)

Now: 150 -170 chf a week (buying more food and meals at migros, taking advantages of bigger packs and just generally cooking at home and planning for it)

- Dinner for 1 person with a normal alcoholic intake

Varies a lot on the place. Chinese food is available from 15chf per meal to 40 if the restaurant is fancy. Italian usually end up costing around 40 per person pizza and a quarter of wine or pasta or equivalent, Indian is more expensive and French as well (unless you go to a  cafe/bistrot). Sushi is really expensive (cheapest I ever paid was 60chf and I am a girl and don't eat much!!)

- Public Utilities per month (I can find the answer for Phone and Net online from the providers)

Electricity and water/gas 50/70chf per month

- Rent (I know this can have a big effect on where you live etc)

Old place was 40 sq. meters but right in the center and close to the lake and was 1400chf a month. Outside now I have a bigger place, still live 10 mints away by bus from the train station and pay a bit more for much bigger place. If you want to pay less then 1000 in the center go for a studio everything else is more expensive (or get a flatmate)

- Public Transport

You can check the rates for the various 'abbonament' on www.tpg.ch I used to pay 400chf a year i think when i was under 26.Now i don't know since I have a train and bus yearly subscription

- Anything Misc you might want to add?

Internet: My phone and ADSL line used to cost 70chf a month (no navigation limits). Now I pay more but I have also ADSL TV (cable tv and loving it!!)

Going out: depends on what kind of 'scene' you are interested into. Salsa and latin places and parties are usually cheaper (free entrance or minimal entrance). Techno and alternative place as well. Mainstream, fancy, clubs are expensive. In one evening be ready to spend at least 100 chf (and that's if you only drink a couple of long drinks before in a bar - between 12-18chf each on average, pay the entrance - 20chf with a drink - and drink a few cocktails (price ranges between 18-20chf for long drinks to 22 - 25 for cocktails to 60 depends on where you go).

Cabs: The most expensive thing EVER. They charge you a pick up fee as soon as you get into one - around 4chf during the day and 7 at night and going from the station to plainpalais or eaux vives (litterally a 20-30mint walk max) will cost you at least 30chf. I never paid less then 20chf even when it was a 5 mint ride.

Cinemas: quite expensive but there are nice options. Without any discount card entry is 17chf, with discount cards it goes down to 11 (minimum). Or they now have a 400chf a year subscription and you can go as many time as you like (good for movie freaks like me)

Trains to travel around: expensive if you don't have a half price card (200chf for 1 year). Geneva Zurich 2nd class cost 70chf for one way without it!!

This covers it all i think

Thanks Vale that will help a lot! I am really surprised the rent was that cheap. I was expecting to pay more like 2500chf for a 2 bedroom.

I think I might plan a trip before any cost negotiations to get a feel for myself.

yes a 2 bedrooom will cost you 2500. beware of Geneva standard. 3piece (3 rooms) means 1bedroom, 1 kicthen and 1 living room. the kitchen counts as a room. So something with 2 bedroom will be counted as 4 piece (or 3 and a half if the kicthen is open) and will cost you 2500. :(
