Geneva Housing Scams

Hello Fellow Glocals, Glocalers and Glocalesses,

I was wondering if anyone knows if the police or some sort of specified department in Geneve can do/offer something about these lame housing scams that seem to be spreading like wildifre.

I have been looking for a place to call home for 2 months now and everytime I think I found something it turns out to be another scam, not that I would fall for it, it just pisses me off and I want to do something about it.

Besides, I'm sure there are some poor people who have/will fall victim to these guys.

P.S: While you're at it if you know someone who wants to rent out a studio for a comprehensible price, holla at me!

It’s a hard fact to accept but for almost every studio/flat on offer there are at least  two dozen or more applicants and only one is going to be lucky.  In due course, the day should come when it’s going to be your turn, insha’lal.

You simply have to keep on trying, as many others using this site will confirm.  And if you think that born and bred Genevans don’t encounter the same problem, I can assure you from personal experience that this is not so.

That said, you could perhaps report the names of the scammers you’ve encountered to ASLOCA, which is the local association defending tenants’ rights.

Best wishes, R.

insha’lal

Damn... an halal Allah... Way to christianize Islam and have them follow the same cannibalistic ritual as the one found in the holy communion!

About the scams, you can alert the cops: I guess they will look into the matter, but they probably won't be able to do much to prevent some new ones to appear.

I didn't quite get what you were saying about Islam and Christianity but I do not see how that relates to any of this.. No need to go there man, let's just focus on finding me a nice place to live in. Focus Causuistik.. Focus !

Sorry... Wasn't meant for you. Just thought it was funny the way Ritchie wrote Inch'Allah. Nothing more.

Btw, even when I focus, it seems to me that your thread is about fighting housing scams and not about finding you a place to live...

Mohamed,

I'm one of the guys running glocals, so I get to see the scam attempts daily (while we now block 95% of them, they still sometimes get in). Our experience with involving the police is that;

- if the scam is web based, without a physical presence of the scammer in Geneva, the chance of the police getting involved is nearly zero.

- if the scammer is based in Geneva, and there is an actual proof you can show the police that he/she took your money, there is a small chance of the police getting involved. Even then, it's not high.

FYI, *inshallal* is frequently used in English and so, too, is the version I wrote but never, as far as I know, “inch”.

However, I am absolutely delighted to have given you a giggle.  Better that than a smack in the eye.
