Not sure if this corresponds to what you're looking for, but fact of the matter is I'll be starting a class on Saturdays near Lausanne aiming at :
- convincing people a great bodyshape doesn't require product ingestion, food deprivation, treadmill-like sweat, or anything costly in terms of either health or wealth - all it takes is applying the right material on the right part of the body - and keeping it.
- providing them with the visible muscle volume increase they always thought they'd get when signing up with whatever gym, but never got.
- providing you them a practical technique enabling them not just to feel better when looking at themselves in the mirror, but also to confront a number of health issues on the prevention side, thanks to the energy being liberated in countless areas of your body that they never thought they could bring well-being in ; as well as counter periods of soul problems they may encounter through the sole use of physical exercises - take care Prozac.
Always had a good time in gyms personally. Problem is, due to the exercizing being extremely limited in time just like in body spots, results, in my case at least, have never come up.
This class will take place on Saturdays afternoon on the UNIL campus near Lausanne, right before the highway end. There is some dedicated exit. Public transportation access is very easy.
I will be running it for three sessions given each fifteen days. Length will be two hours, attendance max 5 and prix CHF 30.- per person / session. Material will be brought free of charge for people to try, and can be acquired on one's own at department stores for no more than CHF 30.-
Pay as you come basis. Nobody asked to come back. Oh, and this is not a too good to be true story. Just that with the help of some basic material, good things can happen.
Private classes available upon request.
Contact:.O7947646-O4.

Thanks b.g., but I enjoy the 'treadmill-like sweat' and it works for me :) Good luck with the class!

While I'm of a particular physical pedigree, my take on the gym thing is here is a great place where to feel part of a community and head for home having forgotten one or the other of a day's concern. So it should continue existing. But when it comes to real muscle growth, real curve-flattening or real heart-endurance improvement, then the question shouldn't be what's the right place but what's the right technique. Running for 20 minutes on a treadmill, to just take this example, is going to have one sweat like mad and mechanically get one rid of one's worries. But the belief that because it brought your heartbeat to 100-something, it is good for heart, is like believing experiencing prolonged anguish would be good for heart too. As long as you don't carry a device that will allow for muscling to happen while jogging - like a rubber band placed at specific spots around the torso, to take that only example - jogging will have only helped you in getting both heart and back - that one being also to get protected - more used.
This technique I described is in fact experimentally used in the armed forces of some country to have people more promptly back on their feet. I believe it has a future.
Regards :)

Obviously jogging isn't going to increase core strength in any significant way. That's what core strength and ab exercises are for! The rubber band idea is interesting - what evidence are you basing it on? Are there any peer-reviewed scientific studies on its effects?

> what evidence are you basing it on ?
What I saw someday in the mirror - not checking everyday due to the self-esteem damaging spectacle
Since then, I combined this with some more aggressive material, and I'm feeling like this mirror episode is miles away behind.

Hi ET,
It depends what kind of classes you like. If you enjoy outdoor fitness training, there are lots of 'bootcamps' at the moment, you can find them via the search function. Amandine, (she posted already) is great, so is Bart at Funcwork or Ryan Christie. They all promote their classes on glocals.
If you prefer a variety of classes, it might be worth joining a gym, but read the contract and cancellation terms very carefully! Silhouette have lots of gyms and are cheaper, but a bit tatty. Many of the same freelance instructors circulate around different gyms, offering the same branded workouts (spin, body attack etc).
You can also find a variety of cheaper classes in the municipal sports Centres, but it may involve a bit of legwork to set a timetable for yourself. There are also dance Centres, specialist Pilates and yoga studios, all kinds of things.
Good luck. Just ask if you have more questions, I spent a lot of time researching this!

Thanks Amy, that's really helpful. Do you know of anywhere that has early morning classes? In Australia a lot of classes are before work, 6-7am, but all of the ones I've looked at in Geneva seem to have most of their classes in the afternoons and evenings.

Hi ET,
The only place I know which starts classes so early is Holmes Place, and they have just a few early classes per week. It might be worth you calling (or googling) some other gyms to check their schedules, Silhouette, California, Usine, American Fitness, Plaza Sport are the bigger ones in town. A lot of gyms do great deals in summer, because they're so quiet. Now would be the time to check them out, but really do read the contract carefully.

Hi ET,
Sorry, but all I have to shamelessly promote is another outdoor fitness class - but it is at 7am in a beautiful setting by the lake in Park Barton/Moynier (Lausanne Side of Geneva), and run by an Australian :-))
Try to go with something that is conveniently located near your home/work. Also, why not try a few of the different outdoor activities suggested over the summer, before locking into a gym. The different group members/trainers can give you lots of hands on advice on gyms and other fitness options. I know my team have their favourite studios for Pilates and Yoga, and a few of them join the Geneva runners for the running and swimming sessions. There is so much to do here (especailly outdoors), and a lot of it can be a great way to meet new people aswell as keeping fit.
And as Amy said - read the contract carefully before signing with a gym.
Cheers
Kathy
