Guide to Caves Ouvertes 2011

Caves Ouvertes is the annual wine festival in the Geneva region. This year it takes place on Saturday May 28th, and it's a great way to taste the lastest wines from local producers.

I have created an English guide for you to make the most of your visit: http://www.genevauncorked.com/caves_ouvertes.html

I have now added the TPG schedule to the guide, in case you want to go by public transportation.

Thanks for the effort Edward, big help.

We are not big wine drinkers but thought we would head out for a bit of a look in the afteroon to enjoy the atmosphere and see some more of the countryside.  We will likely only visit 1 or 2 places, any suggestions for which one is a don't miss?  We will be surviving on public transport only so I was thinking Satigny might be the best bet...

If it's your first time I'd go to either Satigny or Dardagny, because those two places are best to taste the atmosphere.

Several winemakers in Dardagny have set up big tables in their fields so you can have a seat with a glass of wine in your hand, (hopefully) enjoy the weather and watch the crowd. Right in the center of Dardagny there's a cluster of winemakers that are impossible to miss. Hutins, Centaure and Pins make excellent wines but so do several others in Dardagny so you may just want to see which setup (tables, crowds) you like best. The big drawback of Dardagny is that both train (to Russin) and shuttle bus are overly crowded.

Satigny is easier in that you don't need to take a shuttle bus, though you still have to endure the crowd in the train. The domaines are a bit further apart but still within easy walking distance. I can recommend Domaine du Paradis; not only because they're partnering with us (Geneva Uncorked) for a couple of events, but also because they make excellent wines and their wine expert (Didier) is great to talk to (in English). Other notable winemakers around Satigny are Champvigny (in Boudigny), which arguably has the most beautiful domaine in the region, and several in Peissy (Bossons, Charmes).

See the guide (linked above) for addresses and to print a map.

Personally I'm going to Satigny and around (by car), because my goal is to try some new wines at several domaines and most of the ones I'm interested in are in this area.

I'll be looking mainly for 'the best Chasselas of the region' (Chasselas is a white wine grape that's specific to Switzerland), and for a nice fruity Gamay (light red wine).
