Has anyone been through the open university (distance learning)?

How did you find it? And what are the first steps you would need to do to enroll?

And where to go to find out if the studies you have finished in your home country will be recognized in Switzerland?

Any recommendations within Geneva area? I am trying to look for an open university where the lessons are given in English.

Thank you.

Open University gets quite expensive outside the UK. Tuition in Switzerland is outrageous.

I suggest looking at some US schools, such as Western Governors University (fully accredited) - it's about $3k per semester (you can take any amount of credits you can fit in 6 months).

I took 2 courses and I agree, outside UK (unless you are in a 3rd country and then still course options are limitted), it is way too expensive.

I was lucky that my employer took part of the fee. Otherwise the system is geat but demanding. I complited the last course few months back and in 7 months I had to take 8 tests plus the final exam while working full time. That was too much, but I passed Cool

So if you can affort it, go for it they have a lot of resources, library, books, online stuff and forum...

good luck!

This is slightly off topic, but I thought it would be good to know:
The Open University has recently started to give free access to some of their course material: http://openlearn.open.ac.uk/
So you it's possible to "test-drive" some of there course material and get some feeling for distance learning. Also a good opportunity to fill up gaps on some subjects. You can study at your own pace there but, obviously, as there is no exam or paper you wont get a degree or certificate.

I am currently studying at the Open University, I started in January and I think it is an excellent university in terms of modules content, structure and organisation. I am managing to work full-time and study at the same time. If you want any further info I will be happy to share my experience with you if it helps.

Hi there,

I'm also currently studying for my BSc with the Open University and have completed a good part of my degree. It is indeed an excellent university in terms of courses, support and tutors. Distance learning is not easy and it does require a lot of self-discipline, but the courses with the Open University are very interesting and motivating. Their courses allow people to be able to study and work full-time. I am happy to share more of my personal experience if you wish. I can only recommend the Open University.

This seems an old thread I picked up, is there any further advices?

Any other options in Geneva for adults?

Hi, Nehaha, not sure if you still can share your personal experience. Thanks a lot.
