Has anyone lived or is living in Hermance or Onex?
Hi there, I am moving to Geneva in March and am looking for a house for myself, husband and one year old. We would like to know if Hermance or Anieres is a good area to live. Also the other option is Onex. Could anyone shed light on these areas and if its suitable for me and a toddler? Its so difficult doing it from abroad! Thanks very much

i used to work in Anieres....it is a lovely little village. There is one little shop in the village and a small park in the school.

The only downside i can think of is it is quite a way from town if u do not have access to a car but there is a direct bus route.

You are near to City Green gym which is just over the border.

Hi, I dont think that Onex would suit your nedd, it's more appartment buildings and HLM.

Have you try Plan les Ouates, it is a family oriented town very close to Geneva. Also Confignon.

Good luck on your house search, it is quite a challenge in the geneva area.

Hermance is a very picturesque place, and I think the schools are good if you are planning to send your child locally when at that age. You will find it a very 'pleasant' place, safe and relaxing with lots of historic buildings and lake etc, but a bit sleepy. Also, france is within sight so easy to go shopping over the border. Buses into Geneva are pretty frequent during the day and evenings, clean and new (look for 'E' on tpg website). They are not very frequent for late evenings back home though! I think it will take around 30 minutes or so to get into Rive by bus from Hermance so bank on over an hour to get to the airport by public transport. Also don't even think about living there if you plan to commute at peak times by private car to the other side of the lake - its a nightmare. Hope that helps.

Thanks for all your help folks. We've only been house hunting once and picking from these areas seems safer! However your comments have been insightful thank you. It may save us another trip over. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again

Hi - Hermance is a very lovely place but I would say that you may feel a bit cut off there unless you can make a good group of friends there. My friend lived in HErmance with 2 small children and she did feel quite lonely. (Most of the childrens groups she joined people she met all lived a lot closer to Geneva)

Onex is a lot closer to the centre os Geneva and also has some great parks for the children. I agree with the apartment blocks that someone mentioned but that does depend on what side of Onex you live in. I have a friend who has just bought a house there and it is on the more quiet side where it is mainly houses and not the big apartment blocks.

Hope that helps a bit but let me know if you want any further info

Thanks for that. I am moving from Dublin and having just moved here 8 months ago I have to say moving again is a daunting prospect. The last thing I want to do is make the same mistake twice and stay in ALL the time which i did here and is easy with a baby. Now that she is older i have to make more of an effort and if Hermance is too quiet this may be a problem. Being closer to Geneva might be a wiser thing to do. The house is Onex is in a complex of houses and close to a huge complex of apartments. It isn't pretty but the house is lovely and hopefully the area will be more conducive to making friends. How is childcare organised in Geneva. My daughter goes two days a week but I gather in Geneva they don't let them sleep or have lunch in part -time creches. Is that so?

For non working parents the norm is that your child can go to a garderie maximum 3 half days a week. Therefore they don't get lunch or a sleep. You will need to check with the local marie what garderies you have available in your area and also what age they take children from. I live in sezenove not far from Onex and the garderies only accept children from the age of 2. (Cut off date being the 31st October). Other option is a Maman de Jour - Basically someone who looks after your child at their own house and you could agree with them how long your child stayed each time to include lunch and a sleep. Creches here are really for working parents you don't stand much of a chance getting your child into one if you don't work.

Again let me know if you want any further info just send me an email via glocals if it's easier

Hi,

Looks like we are moving to Hermance after all. The house in Onex went too quickly. So I will let you know how things are panning out. Bit nervous to be honest..especially after my husband starts work..Thanks for the advice. N

Hi, I find the Hermance-Anieres area just great. The area has a high social status. I know the area very well, myself living near Corsier village. There is a micro-climate around the lake with definetely better weather here on this side than on the Jura side. To make local social contacts you need to speak a good French, however. In Hermance there is a small local beach with plenty of kids and parents during the summer season, there is a sailing club organising sailing training for kids, and there are several riding stables in the area on both sides of the border. The Geneva Golf Club is on the way towards Geneva, and there are other clubs across the border. There is plenty of nature nearby for nice long walks, and you can reach the Alp region quickly. Nearest supermarkets  are on the Swiss side in Vesenaz halfway towards Geneva, and on the French side in Dovaine. The frustration in Geneva is the cross-town (left-right bank) commuting during rush hours, as the circular highway system around Geneva will take some twenty years more to finalize.

Thanks for the information. It sounds lovely and very very pleased to hear the weather is good. Being in Dublin for the past 9 months has been dire in terms of weather. I haven't really seen the sun since my last holiday in Provence last July...Looking forward to all the activities. My french is good and I can understand more than I can speak which will get better. My husband is a pure conversationist..doesn't really worry about the grammer but we get by very well!...thanks again for your post. N

hi

i know this is a really old thread but I was wondering how you found your eventual move to Hermance? four years later and we are now possibly looking to move but it would be great to hear other peoples experiences. we do already live in a small village outside of Geneva but way on the other side so we would be leaving friends to start again

thanks

Orla

I would be interested to know how well the buses run to and from the centre of Geneva to Hermance/Anieres during the rush hour in the morning and evening, the time table says a 25minutes journey but I dont see any bus lanes for most of the route, does it actually take longer?

When deciding where to live, you could make a list of the things which would be important to YOU personally, (e.g. rent level, schools access, hospitals, public transport, tax rate, availability of work, jobs, salary levels), and give them an importance score out of 10.  Then rate the places you find and compare the result with your score.

e.g. for me it would be:

Distance/time, reliability, and confort of Public transort to work 8/10

Parking 8/10

Living space/rooms 7/10

Ease of Access to Geneva Airport 6/10

General environment, safety, and noise levels 6/10

Communal tax rate 6/10

Cost of public transport season ticket 3/10

Nearby shops/amenities 3/10
