Healt Insurance for EU student living in France

Hello,

I am an Italian student and I will start a post-doctorate position at UniGE in June. I am trying to decide whether to find a place to stay in Geneva or in near-by France (Annemasse, Gaillard, St. Julien etc). I searched a lot about cost of life, apartments etc. but....

What about the health insurance?

- if I stay in Switzerland I will have to pay a rather expensive LaMAL (post-docs could ask for an exception but the law changed few months ago :-( )

- if I stay in France I know that I can decide to go for LaMAL or stay with the French system. Can I use my European Health Card to get covered in the French system (I still have my Italian residence) or do I have to pay for the French public system anyway?

Complicated question I know, but I still can't find a clear answer!

Thanks a lot to everybody,

Gianluca

I don't know about whether your European Health Card will cover you in France, but you should look into the change in the French law that frontaliers are no longer allowed to choose between French and Swiss insurance, but must be in the French scheme. The Association of Frontaliers should have better information http://www.frontalier.org/assurance_maladie_frontalier_2014.htm

This is not accurate.

New "frontaliers" (cross border commuter) may no longer choose a French private health insurance, but they can still choose between the French public health insurance (CMU, sécurité sociale) and the Swiss health insurance (LAmal). This also states the link you provided.

Stephanie is right. From what I understand, "frontaliers" can choose from either the Swiss or the French system.

My doubt is about the French system. In my country (Italy) I am still covered by the Health System, can I use my European Health Card to get cover in the French System?

I am thinking about writing to the French Assurance Maladie website. I will let you know if they give me a reply. In the meantime any info is more than welcome :-)

Thanks again,

Gianluca:

As italian resident and paying member in health insurance system you can be covered during your studies in another EU country as long as you inform Italy and provide proof of your student registration and (intended)residence address in France. Please check with European Health Card details of application. What is possible for a french student based in France and leaving for a fixed period in Italy to pass a post-doctorate ought to be also equally possible to you doing reverse with France and french frontaly zone...I advise you to contact your italian Health insurance provider and find out  the cover extent and (time) limitations.
