Health insurance tips

Ok guys, I saw some questions about health insurance and as a part of my work I leave you some tips:

There are some ways to save money on your health insurance without compromising quality:

- Choose a different model: You can choose one, no difference on coverage, difference on price:

Traditional model (base price = no savings)
You can go to any doctor, anytime.

Family doctor model (you save up to ~ 10%)
You need go visit YOUR doctor first (you can choose any doctor).

"Phone call" model (you save up to ~ 12%)
You need to call to the medical call center before going to any doctor/hospital (unless it is an emergency).

Medic network model (you save up to -15%)
You need go visit YOUR doctor first (you can choose a doctor from the "list")

- Franchises:

If you often go to the doctor, low deductibles .
If you visit the doctor only a few times, high deductibles (lower premium).

There are optimal values for each franchise/medical expenses. For example, in some cases, if you spend less than 1600CHF/year (medical expenses), it's better to have the 2500.- franchise, if you spend more than 1600CHF/year, the best franchise it's always 300 or 500. If you have no idea how much you will spend, it may be safer to choose a 1000 or 1500.- deductible.

(I've made a chart with these data but I don't want to bore you with numbers and intersection points, but if you are interested I can send you the document.)

It's important for you to know that the compulsory insurance has a lot of gaps. For example :

Hospitalization : Full coverage only in the canton of residence;
Medication : Only if belongs to the list (the list has nearly 40 % of all medicaments)
Glasses and lenses: Not covered since 2011
Ultrasound and mammography: 2 ultrasound and mammography in only in case of serious suspicion (cancer).
Emergency transport: Compulsory insurance covers only 50% up to 500CHF/year (the transport costs you more than 700CHF).
And the list continues...

About complementar insurance...

Complementar insurance its very usefull and cheap but you must know what to choose. Beware, because contracts are 1, 3 or 5 years long. Some complementar can cost you only 7 or 8 CHF per month and cover almost everything where base insurance fails. Alternative medicines, glasses, the gym costs, expenses abroad, etc, etc, etc...

Insurance premium changes with age and address. People living outside major cities can save ~40.- per month. Ok, but don't move to your uncle's a farm just to pay less -.-' jk

People often don't know much about health insurance (a lot of people don't even know what they have), because it's mandatory, they are like "oh well, whatever, let's just do it", but if you choose what's best for you, you can save a LOT of money per month and year.

I hope some of this information is somehow helpful.

I'm an insurance broker so if you have any questions insurance related, send me a P.M. or post here. :)

Never trust Insurance brokers, they always push the top 'commission' bases companies, and make you think your getting the best deal available.

But if you do see a broker, do your own Research, bench mark their offers with your own research. Do not sign any contract that you will give them any rights over your insurance decisions.

I made a mistake where I signed a contract, and then when I wanted to contact the insurance company (Generali) the insurance company said my point of contact was the broker, that was in charge of my insuraance. I got the worst help from him and mis-information.

Brokers are like used car salesmen and not your friends, they get you sign a 5 year contract and get the commissions and add no value to your services or coverage.

So I warned everyone and

Sad thing that you had a bad experience, I'm sorry for that. And trust me, no one hates those guys more than honest brokers, no one. But I don't think it's correct to judge all the brokers based on your bad experience, that sounds like a fallacy. Last guy who fixed my car is an idiot... Can I judge all the mechanics? The sample it's just too small.

As you can read, I've presented some facts, "This is cheaper", "this is not", so I'm not pushing anything, and I'm not selling anything. But yes, please, as you said, do you own research. I just wrote that to save you hours of research but sure you need to research. I just wrote something that I didn't had the chance to read when I arrived in switzerland. And I needed it.

Luis, very smartly said. Now I could be wrong about you, but Im still skeptical about Brokers, they just have too much incentives.

As Luis said and agrees, do some of your own research and bench marking, and if the broker truely has a best/better offer, that also meets your needs, then just a second thought, make sure you 'Read the contracts' Because no need to enter a contract with the broker, that always has an arrangement with the insurance company that you finally sign and had been refered by that broker. Also if you sign the contract, their shoudl be no broker fees to the signer/consumer.

Hi,

I have a main insurance with 80% coverage. Recently, I took a complimentary insurance with a company to cover for the remaining 20%. I have been regularly paying premium since the past one year. Recently, I submitted a claim. They rejected my claim and  excluded me from the insurance without assigning any reason. Iwrote to them asking for the reasons for rejection, but no reply so far. I need some advice how to proceed.

Tks

Total BS. You fell on a bad broker, that's all. I've been using a broker for years, and know that he sees me as a long term client so he gets me the best offers. You can't generalize because of your 1 bad experience.

I have mixed views on brokers.  They do shop around and provide offers (but nothing that you couldn´t do if you sat down for a few hours and did the research yourself).  So far so good. But then unfortunately you are often tied in with them for the duration of your insurance although at the time you do not specifically sign anything that states this.  This is specifically my case with an Axa household insurance.  Whenever I call Axa they always say I should contact the broker, or copies of policies etc are sent to the broker first, who then sends them on to me.  If you are on a deadline this can go against you as the policies enter into force when you sign them, not when you ask for them, even if you do it on the Axa website that provides a "start from" field.

So check before signing with your insurance company if they have this "mandate" system with a broker or you can deal with them directly.  Otherwise you will be dealing through a third party for the duration of your insurance, be it with a good or bad broker, as clearly both types exist.
