Heard about another theft today..

Here's me preparing to come stay too..

A colleague today leaving his hotel, walked down the steps of hotel de la paix, put down his backpack and stood beside it, asked a passer by to take his photo in front of the hotel. In the time he got the photo taken his backpack was gone!?

Sounds pretty sneaky and opportune but still not nice..

Be careful out there :)

Update ... Bag returned hotel! Somebody found it in a street nearby and saw the hotel card inside.. Cash was gone and a couple of other things but credit cards, documents and passport still inside..

Oh well.. A bit less troublesome than it could have been..

People should be aware that if you lose your passport or have it stolen and you are not Swiss, you must go to one particular police post in order to report the loss/theft. You will also have to pay 30 chf for the attestation from the police.

The police post is at Chemin de la Graviere 5, Acacias, Bus 11.

Petty crime (if you can call it that) a bigger problem than you realise here....so far from my colleagues (I have been here 1 year);

1) one has been held at gunpoint for his watch

2) multiple people have been burgled - id say more than 1 in 10 that i work with - including finding ppl on their balconies. I myself was burgled within 3 weeks of moving in my flat in central Geneva.

3) Multiple street muggings - including one person's partner being hit over the head and left bleeding on the street one night for multiple hours and various others punched etc and had suitcases stolen (mostly after dark in central areas).

4) a few have had cars broken in to - including the roof slashed open on a soft top to steal some very small change and a bottle of aftershave.

Be vigilant where you can.

The sad ting is that the crime is most probably by foreigners.

Petty crime is rampant in Geneva.  It's not a safe city anymore -- not for Swiss standards, and probably not even for European standards.  Keep your eyes open.
