Help! Need apt/potential scam(s)??
I am currently in desperate need of finding a furnished apartment to sublet in downtown Geneva. But so far I have only come across people in the UK that insist I wire the down payment plus first months rent BEFORE they show me the apartment. Their reasons are to prevent them from scams and because they live in the UK. Normally I would be more hesitant, but I have come across several of the same stories from very different people. They ask for my name, address, passport ID, etc. before e-mailing me the rental agreement (from their "lawyer").

Can someone with more knowledge in apartment hunting in Geneva give me more information and advice?

Thanks! I have 10 days to find a place!

Off the top of my mind this is a 100% SCAM.

Only deal with people you can meet face to face. No wiring of money etc. PLEASE.

Normally I would agree with you too. But my goodness! 10 people I've contacted (and talked to over the phone) have all said the same thing. Oh well.

Any advice on where/how to look for an apt. ASAP?

I would agree that you should only pay out money once you've visited the place and met the person and are happy with the contract content. Why don't you go for a short-term rental for over the Christmas period to give you time to have a look around once you're here.

I'd suggest posting an ad on the Glocals market place (if you haven't already) indicating what you're looking for. Are you also checking the classifieds section of the WRS website for short-term sublets? http://www.worldradio.ch/classifieds/

You will find somewhere because Geneva is full of people coming and going and you should not need to wire money in advance.

Good luck!

true, but exactly on this worldradio.ch website there are many scams, i sent about 10 enquiries and for all of them I received typical scam emails. (Check Scam under the Glocals Market place first post). some of those emails I guess slightly adapted templates and provide the same Uk numbers.

Emmy:

It's a SCAM!!! Don't be tempted to do it, even with time running short, cos you'll lose your money. I'm one of the guys helping run glocals, and I've seen these scams many times. Here's how they usually work.

If you ran into people like that - who asked your to wire them money - on glocals.com, could you pls let me know, so we block and report them?

As for finding a real place: you already know GVA is a hard place to find a place to stay in...Check out the glocals Housing section, cos there's stuff there that's not on the market. Also check out the big housing portals: www.immostreet.ch and www.homegate.ch.

Good luck,

Nir
