Help for permission

Hi to all, I'm Gabriele, I actually live in  Milano (Italy), I'm 28 years old and I'm a computer engineer.

I have already a signed work contract that starts from 1st may, but my new employer said that they don't provide also a living/work permit in Geneve, so I need to obtain it my self... but, in order to obtain it, I need an address. So, I've been in Geneve yesterday and I visited many apartments, nevertheless "Regie" said me that is very difficult to find an apartment in this period (and some "Regie" rejected my request because I don't have yet a permit or a request oh this).

I asked to "Office cantonal de la population" and they said that is possible to obtain the living/work permission also declaring a temporary address in a B&B or in a Hotel or a friend.

And need the permission absolutly until the may,1st in order to start to work. So, I want to ask you have some advices for me. Now I focused my attention in searching for a room (some people says is easier than an apartment) also because some B&B answered "No" to my request.

Thank you,
Gabriele

I've found an apartment!! :D

Today the Regie called me for the good news! Now I have to pay an amount of about 7000 chf as guarantee. I'd need a caution deposit in a back but regie said I could use also this service:

http://www.smartcaution.ch

What do you suggest?

In both cases, what documents I need? Remember I've not the "b permission" yet!

thank you very much,

Gabriele

If you have the money, it is much better to pay the 7000 CHF (you actually don't pay it; you put it instead in a blocked bank account) rather than using this kind of services which often have exorbitant prices.

For the documents, better ask the Régie which ones they require.

If you are short on cash for the deposit and If your regie suggested smartcaution then it means they authorize it. I used to have a bond in the bank but when my regie suggested smartcaution i transferred to them and freed up my blocked money from the bank.

Call them up and check for the requirements.

Gabriele,

Smartcaution can be a quick fix solution. I decided against it as the fees involved seemed higher than I wanted to pay.

So here in Geneva, banks are used to opening the account to block a deposit for an appartment. You sign the forms, the reggie or owner of appartment sign the forms and the bank retains the originals on file. When we leave or change apartment, the reggie or owner will sign a letter release to say the apartment is in good condition and the deposit can be released back to you. The account will always be in your name with the bank but the reggie or owner of apartment will be the co-signee and you cannot access the funds unless they are released by reggie or owner.

Hope this little bit of info helps you decide what to do.

Something is fishy.  This is the first time I've ever heard of an employer not assisting a new hire with obtaining a titre de séjour.  I'd be afraid to enter into an apartment contract -- what if a problem arises with getting the permit?

As a EU citizen, you may be able to start work so long as your application for a permit is in the system. But you should check this.

To get the permit you will need your work contract, and your rental contract, and obviously your passport etc.

If your work contract is not limited to time (ie for one year etc) then you shouldnt have a problem getting a B, if it is time limited you probably will get a different permit relevant to that.

good luck.

Thanks to all for the advices!

I've contacted a guy (foreign too) that already works in the same company in which I'll work, and he said the company doesn't support him too for the permissions. But for his was easier because he had already an address (I suppose some friend address).

Now I have to compile this module:

http://www.ge.ch/etrangers-confederes/fr/doc/ue4-1-formulaire-ue.pdf

the company will send me his part, do you know how compile the section "Données personnelles concernant l'arrivée à Genève". Which is?

If I am not mistaking the employer is responsible for securing your residence permit and you shouldn't apply yourself. It's very bizzare that the employer refused theyr assistance. I would not want to work for someone with an attitude like that in the fisrt place. Think twice before you sign anything, this is most unusual.
