Home Break in

Returned last night around midnight from vacation to find signs of an attempted break in. The door was pushed in to break the locks but unsuccessful and also there were marks of some sort of object used to pry open the door. They werent able to open the door as fortunately I had locked all 3 locks on the door before leaving for vacation. Had to call the emergency locksmith service to come and fix the lock so I can get into the apartment. Cost me 350 CHF and all the wasted time and hassle.

I have seen others posting their stories of break ins. I wanted to add this here so people are aware of this situation and cautious specially when going away on vacation. I live on the 6th (top) floor of what is considered a very secure building complex. But it seems like nothing is. ** This is a public service announcement**

Interesting.  I always hear that break-ins occur most often on the top floor and the bottom floor.  The top has the least foot traffic nearby and the bottom makes for a speedy getaway.

The top floor apartment (immediately above mine) was broken into about two months ago.  The robbers broke through both of their locks!!  This was in a "very secure" apartment building in Plainpalais.  Two days later, some assclowns broke into my car, which was parked in our "secure" parking lot beneath the building, and made off with my brand new GPS that had been hidden in my glove compartment.  When I reported it to the police, I asked if this number of break-ins was unusual for the area.  He looked at me, smiled, and in broken English replied: "welcome to Geneva."

Ya, The brigade contre les combriolage gave out a statistics that in average there's 24 break-in every day in whole Gva..which is huge..thats why it's been suggested to put the security bar even it cost arn 800chf :(  but at least you won't find yourself without anything while you come back to your home.

Upon talkin to neighbors, I just found out that whoever tried unsuccessfully to break-in to my apartment was able to get into a neighbor below's apartment and made away with some jewellery, money and a laptop.

I guess I was lucky that I locked all 3 locks before leaving for vacation which detered the guy from spending too much time on my door. I suppose we should make it as hard as possible for these guys to do what they are trying to do.

Just  a question. Did your insurance cover part or all of the 350chf for the lock?

Leave a chewed-up stick on your doormat and put a sticker on your door, mentioning, casually: "Swiss Rottweiler Club". I don't know about "Kitten Club Geneva". That might work, too. If so inclined, replace the stick with a femur.
