How Urbanbio tried to circumvent the law...

Sorry, I found it only in French...: http://www.letemps.ch/Page/Uuid/f379f664-bd24-11e0-8e83-25da50b06655

Basically, in order to give us the luxury of shopping on Sundays and in the evening, they gave all their employees the title of "cadre dirigeant" ("executive") so that they wouldn't be under the law... but the salaries didn't follow, with a maximum of 4500CHF per month including extra hours and Sundays! So they were denounced to the authorities who ordered them to comply to the law regarding opening hours. And what did Urbanbio do? They sacked most of their employees so that they could do some kind of franchising contracts and circumvent the law in this way....

Hmmmmm, do I really want to continue shopping in that kind of place? Don't "bio" and "ethical" somehow go together?? Makes me think...

Well, that's a damn shame. Thanks for posting the link. Back to the Eaux-Vives store and Ferney-Voltaire...

I too would like to see more shops open late and on Sundays, but at what cost? I'd like to know that the employees working there at those hours are fairly compensated.

Coming from the high-tech world, I know these tricks very well. The problem is, what do we do to stop this? Boycotting the chain won't achieve much, as less revenue will only cause the company to fire employees altogether...

According to the press release on their site, the issue is not as "cut and dry" as it appears.

http://www.urbanbio.ch/

Hopefully the truth will eventually come out.

Can someone explain why the stores are closed in the meantime?

It's  a pity, because they were really the only decent Bio shops in Geneva
