How to get your driver license in Geneva

Hello,

I have been looking on the internet and I am kind of lost.

I though for to get your driver license in Geneva you have to do a first aid course (i found one in english) then i wanted to go to bern to do the theory test in english. I also found english instructer and then exam and finish?

but now I read that you have to do ass well an eye test? and that after 3 years you get your license because you still have to do two tests. And you have to follow theory lessons? are they in english?

im very confused, hope someone can help me and explain how the process goes...

Hi,

Don't treat this as gospel because i've not checked yet, but i believe you can go to the police station to fill in most of the forms, they will require only an eye test, but you will need to re-take your test if you have waited longer than a year since you arrived in Geneva.

I'm going tonight so I will let you know if it's any different and what they say

1. Print out form or get the from for driving license

2. Go to any eyes glasses shop (get a test) cost around 15CHF. They will write it down on your driving license form.

3. Do a First aid course (you can do it even in french as,all you have to do is sitt in the session for 8 hours and hear the person/instructor.)

4. Theory test (Don't need to do in English/ Even french one is very easy just buy a cd and do the practice will take your 2-3 weeks even)

5.After completing your theory test (course de sensibilisation) again 8 hours session.

6. do some practical exam preparation and give your test.

7. Hurry you are done.

Bradh is right. This is the process. I will elaborate it more:

- after practical test and if you pass your test you get a three years probabtionary license. During these three years you have to do a two days course of 16 hours. It is not a test just a compulsory course in order to get your full license.

- if you dont pass your test on first try you can try a second time, if you dont pass the second time, you must go to a certified instructor who will give you a letter that you are read (if you are really ready) and if you dont pass the third time then you need to go to a psychologist at HUG to see if you can drive at all :)

So for the moment just do the First aid, get the form, go to Visilab and get it filled for the eye sight section and then go and book your theory test. After theory test is passed start practicing and once you know you are ready then do the Cours de Sensibilisation, which is 8 hours course and done over 4 days, once you do that then you can book your practical test. Good luck!

No, cours de sensi is not in English and I don't know if it's available in English anywhere. But that is a later thing. First you need to pass your theory.

This is a stupid question but just to make sure this is the first driving license you are getting? I mean you don´t have one from your home country? Because if you do have a license from home country you can use it for one year here and then you have to get the Swiss one. But it´s rather easy then, only eye test and some paperwork and couple hundred francs and you´re done :)

But to get the license for the first time, of that I have no idea...

you can do it in almost any driving school.

don't need to do in english. Believe me! just go and sit in the course. They will only tell you things you already know! for example, Don't drive when you are drunk. about car tyres.drive carefully in snow etc... So really you don't need to do anything in english..
