I teach intermediate level english for the Ecole Schulz in Geneva. I am a free-lance IT consultant the rest of the time. I have published professionally in English and German. I am a native english speaker (Canada) who can also help you polish your texts.

I live in the Champel area and have flexible hours. My rate starts at 60 CHF per hour for intermediate level. Higher rates apply for domain specific work in Finance and IT.

The English isn’t much better.  Glaring typos and split infinitives throughout such as “colaborate” and ”help organizations converse better internationally”?!?!?

And “you may check out my website” - No, “you CAN check out my website”.  As you posted a link, I don’t need your permission.

I’d stick with JulianT and Thomson Languages.

.....and Carolyn I am not sure you are right about " may". As I understand it,MAY functions also as a more formal version of MIGHT ,meaning possibility, as in " you may wish to send your luggage on in advance,in which case..etc" .There is more to " may" than the idea of permission.

I would like to suggest that the use of the word “may” conveys the impression that the author was thinking in French and wrote a literal translation whereas a native English speaker would have “invited” the correspondent to “take a look at” or “check out” the website and then email if he/she required further information.

 

To be effective and worthy of its hire, linguistic tuition calls for much more than the ability to chat or socialize.

Can is usually associated with the ability to..

May (as in at your pleasure) is often used amongst english elites by the service giver to the service consumer and is similar to phrases such as "at your earliest convenience" (meaning as soon as possible with a connotation of great urgency and importance).

It is a question of class, or if you like, snobbery.

It has nothing to do with snobbery or class, but DOES have everything to do with manners as you are asking permission (or declaring a possibility, see below) when using "may" rather than expressing the ability to be able to do something (as someone mentioned earlier when using"can").

It also has a lot to do with possibility and probability.

A "may vs can" example:

"Can I leave the table?".  Of course you CAN, you stand up, put one foot in front of the other and leave. (Probability.)

"MAY I leave the table?".  No, I would rather you wait until everyone has finished. 

"Can I play basketball".  Of course you CAN, you just throw the ball into the net and hope for the best.

"Can I play basket ball tomorrow night after school".  Possibly, I MAY have to check with the school.

Furthermore (Buzzcocks.....) "may" and "might" also express possibility and probability.  For example:

It may rain tomorrow. (Possibility.)

If I win the lottery, I might buy a Ferrari.  (Probability - CALL ME IF YOU DO!).

In tomorrow's lesson, we can discuss "compared with" vs "compared to" (my No. 1 bugbear!).

All this for FREEEEEEEEE!!!!!

two spaces between the sentences of an English text but only one when typing a French document.

And believe you me I was definitely in trouble if I ever failed to observe that rule.

However, while many francophones know the French custom, they are rarely told that the English practice is different.
