I really need to vent

Hello Gloclers,

So it's about the pain of finding accomodation.

.... I have been living in a sublet for the last 5 years and although that's a long time, there has always been pressure for me to move out because the actual tenant intends to come back (and the agreement is that I get a 3 months notice) Moreover, the regie is unaware of the subletting so I am always in fear of being kicked out should they find out.

I have therefore been searching to find something on my own for the last 5 years!!!! Cry through regies or owners and I have made several apartment visits and applications to no avail. I'm now reaching a breaking point....meanwhile the pressure to leave my current sublet is mounting.

I am a single, non-smoker and with no kids and although I am a junior professional with a not-so-high salary, I can afford a rent of 1'200 max.

What would you do if you were in my shoes?

I would find a roommate. An entire apartment of your own for just 1'200 is going to be very difficult to find, as you already know from the past 5 years. Good luck to you!

Hello Nadia,

Having a budget of CHF1200, you can find several houseshares in glocals or elsewhere. My suggestion would be to say explicitly that you want long-term (6 months to 1 year). I'd also suggest that you search for houseshares a bit further from the center such as Bernex, Versoix, Onex, etc.

That said, it's true that when you sublet you don't have much control of the end date of your lease, but that's something you cannot change.

Another alternative would be to rent a 2 bedroom flat and you become the landlord and rent out the 2nd bedroom to someone else. You'd pay the same, but you'd be in control of your rental agreement.

Best of luck!

Have you considered nearby France, where rents are far cheaper, and at a stonethrow of Geneva city center by public transportation? The loss in commuting time will be far less than the gain in peace of mind :)
