Indian cooking courses?
I know Kiriel does her sushi classes so I was wondering if anyone on here does/knows of somewhere to learn Indian cookery? It's something that has always interested me and I've dabbled in but I need to take it to the next level. Ideas anyone?

What a great idea...and if we find out where there are Indian Cooking courses, I'll join as well. I will send this question to the Indian members of glocals in GVA, maybe they can help.

A good frioend of mine is a Swiss chef with a passion for Indian cuisine. I'll ask him if he'd prepared to organize a course for Glocalers. His English is OK but might be unsufficient, so it will most likely be a bilingual (Fench + English) event. The only problem is that he does not have place to deliver the course, i.e. no kitchen.

I'l get back with details as soon as I have spoken to him. In the mean time if someone has an idea for an appropriate place, that would be perfect.

Can "maybe" organise it with a real indian cook to do it...??

Will go "twist" the arm of the cook while somebody come back to suggest where we can get a place to do it.

Cheers,

Mike.

Cool, that'd be great! I'm gonna get in touch with Kiriel about the venue she uses for her sushi classes and see what the deal is.

I reckon we can do it along the "feed the needy" style.

1) We meet in a place at a certain time

2) We go shopping for the ingredients & etc together.

3) We cook, drink, and eat all the stuff up.

Can somebody coordinate logistics? i.e. get everybody's email and we decide the rest.

Cheers,

Mike

The Curry Club has been twice to the Lady Godiva pub and the food was cooked by the same Indian chef both times - and reading the comments every body was very satisfied. You can talk to Dean 'Deano1uk' of the Curry Club and Glen 'glen' of Lady Godiva.

OK, my friend Sergio is not an Indian Chef, but he loves Indian Cuisine, which her learned in India. He'd be perpared to give us an English speaking Indian cuisine course at his place, in Seyssel (googlemap), for 6 (OK, 5 because I'll be in :)) but that's a one hour drive from Geneva (I've got my car and we just need a second driver), or for more at someone else's place.

Please let me know if this is an option and I'll post it in the events section.

AMAZING!

Well I've written to Kiriel to get the info on the place she uses for her sushi workshops and so hopefully look into that as that way can have more people.

Just a quick note...since, well, I am Indian...and I cook a lot of Indian food at home. Not restaurant type stuff but good ol' home cooking.:P.

Be sure whatever you guys decide that you get the spices and rice (especially), lentils, even some vegetables, etc. from an Indian store. If you're doing a feed the hungry type thing and go shopping this might be an interesting trip in itself, just to get a feel of what to look for, etc.

There are a couple of Indian stores in Servette, which are the ones I go to.

Good luck and happy cooking and eating all.

HABSgirl, great that you got in touch with Kiriel. I'll just wait for you to get back with more details.

Sergio used to be the chef of the Café Gourmand. He imports spices from India to prepare his own masalas and curries. I'm sure he can give us a very good intro to this delightful cuisine.

Jawahara, good ol' home cooking is the best anyway. I studied in Delhi for a couple months and sometimes visited my friends at their homes - that was easily the best food I had in India, not in the restaurants!

So... wouldn't you show us something? ;-)

I didn't have a kitchen in Delhi so I couldn't learn much there, and I've been trying to recreate some of my favorites since I'm back (Chole Bhature!), and while it's not bad what I cook, it's just not quite right...

Where are those Indian shops in Servette? I found a rather large one in Rue De Carouge, but it can't do harm to explore some more...

[quote]your proposal sounds good too :), but since it's limited to 6 and an hour away...

maybe i can suggest organizing this around a day trip first to Lake Annecy and then

the group can continue around 5-6ish towards Seyssel (i could also drive my car

all the best!

Excellent idea, Acquarius. HABSGirl is getting in touch with Kiriel to see if we could use her sushi place, in which case the number would not be an issue anymore. However, I suggest a max of 12 participants for the comfort of all.

Hi,

I'm in also. I'm a big fan of Indian cooking. I have a colleague who is Indian, I can ask her if she knows someone and where is the best place for shopping?

Let me know if that sounds a good option.

Best

There's a good culinary school in Eaux-Vives that offers Indian cooking courses.  It's 8 hours of instruction divided into two evenings and costs 200chf.  They also offer group discounts. www.chex.ch

To get your palate salivating here's a really good site with fab recipes.

hi all,

don't want to sound pretentious but 200 chf to learn indian cuisine, that's a bit expensive. I'm mauritian and I'm used to preparing indian dishes. i like cooking very much.

i can provide you with basics in indian cuisine. However since i'm new in geneva, i still need to find a good shop to do my groceries.

I'll be more than happy to share my recipes with you. (i don't have them in writing). i'm more prepared to do kind of a work shop if someone "lends" his / her kitchen. Not possible for me right now since i still need to find my apartment. If I find one with a really nice kitchen I can invite afterwards.

I can introduce you to the mauritian cuisine as well (cuisine creole)

let me know if anyone's interested.

Hi All,

Why don't those of you who are interested in doing a simple good old fashion home cooking event send your email to - [email protected]

I'll try to organise a cooking event for 10-12 people soon.

Cheers,

Mike.

btw...

There is one indian bazaar shop that have the widest range of indian food stuff (+fresh) is located in Rue de Fribourg. In the paquis area opposite the Ole Ole tapas bar.

You can find almost all Indian stuff  there compare to some shops in Servette (Sri Lankan).

I reckon before cooking, go shopping together with a "guide" is alway very help to learn the ingredients and food stuffs.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Everybody,

So where are we?

We know where to find the food (Paquis); we have a mauritius cook with us... but we don't have a place.

If we wait a bit I can offer my kitchen (if the regie decides to give me the place I want).

If not, why don't we meet somewhere to go for a drink and discuss it?

By the way do you know some good Asian take away in Geneva?

Best
