Insurance and surgery

Dear all,

I am having a hernia problem that requires surgical repair. My insurance company (Swiss-Care) told me that they are willing to reimburse the surgery as long as it's done in a university/public hospital.

My appointment with a surgeon is on next Friday, however I was told by my GP that it could take up for 14 weeks between a consultation and the actual surgery.

I can't really wait for that long as my hernia bugs me very much everyday. The only option I have is to go private. Then again, it is not covered by my insurance.

Is there anyway I could have my surgery without waiting too long? I am thinking about getting another insurance that covers private treatment, but I doubt they would reimburse me for this surgery...

Thank you all in advance!

Well, I think you can try in another hospital (possibly in a different canton) but be aware the your insurance only covers as if it was in your canton of residence. If in different canton it's more expensive, they wont cover the difference (base insurance problem).

For this problem, the complementar insurance will not cover the surgery, because it's a "pre-existing disease". But it's always important to do complentar insurance because de base insurance does not cover a lot of things. Send me a PM if you want some tips on the complementar insurance.
