Insurance for rented apartments in Geneva

Is it compulsory to get an insurance when we get in to a agreement for rent an apartment in Geneva ?

Is this a new rule ? As my agent is asking me to do it. He is offering its like
new rule in Geneva, Is it correct ? I have a doubt that he is running an insurance
agency and because of that only he wants me to do it .

Please share with me your ideas.

The Assurance ménage is the insurance which will cover YOUR things against fire, water, thieves, etc. and is not compulsory. What your agent ask for is only the Responsabilité civile, which covers what you could damage to the flat or things which are already in, and are the subject of your rental. It cost about Frs 100./year not expensive at all, but compulsory. You can do it in any insurance company, even online.

Best,

Anne

I think I have the Zurich household insurance - is that the same as the Responsabilité civile? It is about 150 a year... Will it cover my parquat floor damage?  is there a deductible usually?

It can't be very different from canton de Vaud.

"Responsabilité civile" I doubt it, it's mandatory when you are a driver (it's included in the car insurance), the private it's not mandatory.

Here, what's mandatory it's the insurance against fire (I received a letter today about that), for all your things inside the house. And that can cost like 20 or 30.-/year, it depends...

But I'm talking about here in Vaud. It's better if you speak with someone in the commune or something. Here everyone has a different opinion.

Hello, the most of the time, the "household" insurance is done together the "responsabilité civile privée".

The "household" protects YOUR own things against fire, water, theft and is not compulsory, but highly recommended. Its price depends on the value of your own things you announce.

The "responsabilité civile PRIVEE" is the insurance which is compulsory if your are a tenant or owner, because it protects the things or flat, or building you are living in when you are a tenant. It protects the things THAT DOESN'T BELONG TO YOU, in case of you were the cause of the dammage.

About what Luis says, the "responsabilité civile VEHICULE" is another insurance which is compulsory if you want register/matriculate a vehicule. It has only to do with the vehicule you own and drive, in case of you cause an accident on the road, to cover the dammage you could do to other vehicules or persons.

Best,

Anne

Hi,

Let's clarify things a little bit.

third part liability insurance (responsabilité civile) is not mandatory, but required by most owners and regies, and is highly recommended to have. It covers physical or property damages that you or your family members may do to third parts. i.e, damages done to the floor

The average cost is about 100.-/year for an individual and 150.- for a family.

Usually it is grouped with a content insurance (assurance ménage) that covers your personal belongings against fire, theft, water damages, natural hazards, etc..

It's also not mandatory (except fire cover in some states, i.e:Vaud) but highly recommended to have, as it will pay for your personal belongings in case a covered event happens.

best,

Aymeric

It may be a third part liability cover that you have, needs to be verified on your policy to be sure.

If you did damage your floor (i.e: long scratch done while moving your furnitures) it "should" be covered, depends of the situation (How, when, who, what...).

Usually the deductible for third part liability is 200.-, it may be 0.- or more than 200.-, you need to check on your contract, but 200.- is the most common deductible.

cheers

Dear Anne and Aymeric, thank you for your feedback.  Let's suppose my parquet flooring is damaged last month by stay over guests with a child's highchair which left several chips on the floor when they left.  In this scenario of how when who what, willl it be reimbursed above the ard 200CHF deductible?  Crossing my fingers that the regie will consider it as wear and tear.  at least if not, hopefully the insurance will cover.  Thank you very much by the way!
