International shipping (relocation)

Hi glocals folks!

First off, happy new year 2014 to all...

I need to ask if anyone has experience shipping things overseas and could recommend a good company out of Geneva destined for Vancouver?? I have only about 4m^3 of stuff, mainly sporting goods, a bed, and books.

I've heard that it's quite common that ppl do this... basically Mr. X gets a job in Singapore and moves his entire family and household contents from say, New York to Singapore. A company is called, they come and pack it all up in a container, put it on a ship, and poof, 3 months later it arrives. I've heard the price is about 2000-3000 $ depending on the route and volume/weight of the goods.

In my case, since I have only about 4 cubic meters of stuff it should be possibly cheaper. (I'm even considering the idea of purchasing the container that goes with it in case someone has knowledge of that!)

Thanks o' knowledgable glocals communitarians!

Dave.

Did it two years ago from Chicago with Pelichet (based in Geneva, my company payed for it) and all went nice and smooth. May be worth considering to operate with a relocation agent based in Vancouver so that you'll have an office with physical people to interact with once you are there waiting for the shipping to arrive. Given the low volume your best bet is probably to have your stuff packed with somebody's else stuff in the same container. Most of the companies have this option, which is cheaper, but takes longer. If you manage to steer out of the paranoia/drama, this site http://www.movingscam.com has some useful general info.

Thanks folks, I've received a quote... it's about 4000 CHF so far. A little outside my budget really. But I'll keep shopping around, espeically in France voisine, perhaps it's cheaper.

I'm wondering now if a possibility might be to BUY a small shipping container (10' or 20') and fill it myself and then have someone ship it. It won't be cheaper to do this, but I was looking into buying a container to have in Canada anyways so... does anyone in glocals know someone who works for any industrial compaines who might have an old container to sell?

Thanks!
