Is Geneva washing out your style?
Hi Geneva!

I am Carolina, a designer and ex-model from Argentina working in Geneva in my own company since January. I work in women self development helping them to find their Identity and Inner Power to succeed and create the life they dream.

many of my clients are expatriate, and I hear again and again the statement that goes... 'after so many years in Geneva -or Switzerland- I lost my style, my wardrobe is all black and I don't know how to dress anymore.' and continues... 'people here don't dress up, so I gave up my style and don't dare to dress fancy or extravagant anymore'...

I wonder what you think about this, and if you relate yourself to this attitude. Is the answer to the cliche that Switzerland is boring? Why would you give up your identity to become one more of the crowd wearing suit event to the cinema?

I am set up to inspire as many as women as possible, if there is any thing you would like to work on in a conference or seminar related to this topic, just let me know!

Watch out! As the way you dress should be a form of self expression with the purpose of getting what you want in life!

Looking forward to read comments and learn from you!

Hi Carolina, Just to put my two cents in, I understand what your clients tell
you. I am a designer myself and have noticed that Geneva lacks a style of its own. Unlike Paris
or Milan, Geneva is not a city one can say is known for the style of its women. If you can help
that it would be wonderful, if I can help you, even
better!Best, Diego

Hi Diego, thanks for your 2 cents :)

I know is not Milan or Paris, what I would like to discover is what about Geneva is so strict that make women 'loose' their expression and become a grey-suit wearer.

What is your design field? I have clients which finally wear statement pieces. And for that, i need designers. :)

Live in colour!

 Hey guys,

Interesting topic.

Geneva has its dress style, and it's a very conservative (I'm generalizing of course).

You don't have to go to huge cities like NY or London to compare. Just go to Zurich, and I think you'll see a real difference in the way people dress on the street on a Sat morning.

What you would recommend to people who want to change completely the way they dress?

Hi Maria, If you want to change the way you dress, first, answer yourself few questions such:

- how would you like to change?
- what would you like to achieve with your new style, image, and attitude?
- if you have already that desired style, what would you achieve?

as we talked in the other forum, your wardrobe is one of your secret weapons... the one who tells about your story to he world

- buy new clothes as Marina says is one tactic. Never forget what is the strategy behind that! On top, knowing what to buy will allow you to save money and time! :)

@ Nir O. Don't need to go to Zurich, already in Bern you can see the difference! :)

@ Bertrand. Is not about the city. About the people and the way the express themselves. I dream with giving tools to find their own place for expression, for change and grow. :) Even if the environment can be a big influence, keep being yourself! I will keep researching about this !

@Carolina

To answer your questions:

- dress a bit more feminine. Not just jeans and tshirts (which are very practical). My sister does it easily. I have no idea how.

-What would i like to achieve. Nothing really. Im pretty happy with the way i look but got tired of it (its 27 years old!) and i need a change. Maybe i would like it

-I dont have the desired style thats why im posting here :)

What i would like to understand is basically why other women have style and i dont. This last sentence is not very clear sorry. Im translating literally from Greek. Well you get the point :)

Plus i dont know what to buy. Having a mans second opinion will help :P As long as he keeps me out of the jacket section. This is really a problem :P

Hi MAria, i just replied to you about the wedding dress. :)

If you would like to change the way you dress, first think:

How would you like to feel in your new style? What would you achieve, if you were already feeling that way?
The way we dress is part of our identity. Part of our purpose and of what we create in life for ourselves-

A small exercise you could do is to collect pictures that inspire you, about everything (art, landscapes, clothes, houses, etc etc). Make a collage and make a list of the characteristics in those pictures that are appealing to you. You will discover a list of qualities that are withing you, waiting to be expressed. That is the reason why certain things appeal more than others. Because they resonate with you.

List the colours on those pictures, and describe the style.

You will get so inspired and is so much fun!!

reading this thread, makes me feel this issue is very complicated.so I don't really understand anything :-)but my "2 CENTS":-)) (I really like this one) are I've never seen any difference in the dressing style of people in CH (either  zurich, bern or geneva ) although I do care about how people look.  I think it's simple: you just dress according to the situation. I dont wear a tie to go to meet friends, or a jean to go to at a meeting at the UN, or leather shoes instead of snickers or sandal (depending on the weather) to go on the street.but the big problem-if it is-  with this way of doing is my wardrobe has always been almost as big as my sisters' :-)).so my opinion is when it comes to dressing one should have his own identity, but should also consider what other people would think. because your own identity and other people's references do not always match, and the best think to do is always to find the style that integrate the  opposite stylesI hope I'm not out of topic! :-))

Thanks Bishy! I just saw this thread after I asked you! I also have asked the forum if there is anyone in Ferney since I am living there now and it would be more convenient.

 Hi,

I completely agree with Carolina on her initial thread. :-)

I come from Brazil and I live in Rio, so you can try to guess what my dress style can be. At least we like to dress colourful, this is one major difference I first found out when I arrived in Geneva. So, I have asked and watched people on the streets, and Gosh! They do dress very boring, whether it's black, brown or grey!!! Talking to some people I found out that they consider themselves classsical when it comes to dressing style.

Ok, I think that we can't compare Geneva to Paris or Milan but taking as example one smaller city I have been lately which is Copenhagen. I was amazed how creative people can be over there.Another thing I also noticed is that they aren't too much into what is fashion right now, but if you watch closely without judging, you can feel the freedom they have in their dresscode which in my opinion is the most important thing! I was kinda lost in the beginning, but I like trying new things, I do like colours and they aren't afraid of mixing things which in the end looks great!

I really don't know how to advise Maria on her style changing, but one thing I also know, that it will be kinda hard if you shop in Geneva. I wasn't so inspired to buy there, all the things looked pretty much the same. I have the "bad habit" of buying things when I travel so I always have something different from the places I have been.

If I move to Gva in the future, I guess that I'll be travelling to Paris or London for shopping on weekends…

So, yes it is right...Geneva is the town with lack of style. Of course there is a possibility to go to buy new clothes in other big cities, but if you do not have time and you have to find something good very fast...so you go to some shop and find out that you can choose between grey clothes and grey clothes.:)  So what to choose in this case? I prefer colorful, feminine clothes and high heel shoes, but to find something bright and interesting is a really big problem here in Geneva.

Isn't this a problem in many european cities? thanks to globalization we are all wearing the same things..H&M, Zara,Mango, Morgan...there are everywhere. Juste the other day I saw a girl in Barcelona with MY coat!!!
If you want original, you need to spend some money and explore the little boutiques that are not on the high street but in the small allleys in eaux Vives, old town and Carouge.
The problem is might have to spend some extra.
But hey even the big names have some original stuff I think and you can just combine it with a 'original' handbag, some nice shoes and some funky jewellery and you'll outfit will be half as boring! ;)

Re: how to change how you dress. There are some books out there with suggestions on how to break the rut.  If you are not a natural shopper or don't have natural style sense, it can be difficult. You could try: Brenda's Wardrobe Companion" by Brenda Kinsel. MIgros also occasionally runs a one-day course to do with clothing and makeup styles. Lastly, if you can afford there even in a small city like Geneva you could probably find someone helps people for a living. Or if you have a friend who has the knack of dressing, drag them out with you or you will just end up buying the same stuff as usual. Geneva doesn't make it easy. Good luck!
