Is this worth the price for Geneva?

Thanks for your help all.

I'm due to intern at the WHO this summer and have been quoted a rental price of 950CHF per month plus 75CHF tax for a single bedroom with a wash basin at John Knox in Geneva.

Is this price worth it/typical for Geneva? Do you think ill be able to find cheaper accommodation or flat shares?

Thanks so much.

It's about the market price, assuming the room and apartment are decent and fully furnished. I know it's hard to believe, but sadly it's true...

You might be able to find something cheaper, but not much.

It is normal price, geneva is expensive. Because normally an apartment rent is average around 2500 to 3000 CHf in geneva. Assuming Two bed rooms. So if you share an apartment with one room. You get an share of around 1250 to 1500 CHf.

In confirming the info already given, I would add that the price of rented accommodation normally also includes a contribution to the cost of utilities such as:  electricity/gas, heat, water, insurance, radio & TV reception, wifi connection, house-cleaning, none of which comes cheap.

The going rate for a comfortable room with wifi connection in a well-equipped apartment in a reasonably central location in Geneva is ca CHF 1000 per month.  While there are some cheaper offers to be had, they naturally get snapped up very quickly so check the ads every day.

Prices are generally lower in France but the time and cost of the commute can offset the saving to some extent.

It can’t be said often enough:  Geneva is an expensive place so be prepared to adapt your budget accordingly.

All the best, R.

Many thanks for the help, all. I suppose I'll have to fork out and become accustomed to Geneva prices!

May I chime in and add that John Knox is not very accessible nor central...but it is near WHO I guess... by displacement.  The classified ads here may have better prices or location... have you asked them about washing of laundry/cooking?  because eating out is also expensive here... Best of luck!

If you are at WHO this may not be of interest - but we had an intern live with us in Rolle and we charged 750 a month including meals. We would do this again if you are interested  - we live in a large apartment overlooking the lake and 7 mins from the train station. But then you have to factor in the cost of the train ....

… and the time of the commute plus the fact that most intern activities take place in and around Geneva.  But Christine’s offer is certainly very good value.

One source that hasn’t (I think) been mentioned is UNIGE’s “Service de logement”.  And as a long shot, the HUG (Hôpitaux universitaires de Genève) might also be worth contacting as they also have interns working there.

Thank you all. I went for the CUG university dorms in the end and look forward to meeting you in Geneva.
