Italy

Hi all..

My husband and I are going to drive through Italy over Christmas and need some suggestions.  We have been to Florence, Siena, Pisa, and San Gigimano.  I think we are going to go to Venice, Rome, and Naples (as well as Sorrento and Pompeii).  However, I have heard that Naples may not be the best place to stay.  Any thoughts?  Is Pompeii and Sorrento worth the visit?

Thanks,

Kat

Naples is beautiful!

Just do what any smart tourist should do: park the car in a safe place (parking of the hotel) and don't walk around with jewels / rolex, don't keep all your belongings (money, documents...) in the same place and keep your wallet in the safest pocket.

You needn't become paranoid, though. I've never been pickpocketed in Naples (I've been in Madrid, for example).

Enjoy holidays.

Hi! I'm from Sorrento and of course I suggest visiting it. From Sorrento you may plan a visit to Pompei (simply using the metro) to Naples (40 minutes by ferry) and to Positano (the Amalfi Coast is really close). If you need help to plan just ask.

Ciao

Sorrento and the amalfi coast was a bit of a disappointment for me; I just found that it was sadly waay too overrun by English tourists and had lost its charm somewhere in the midst of all the tourists, a bit like the overtouristy places of Spain.  If you loved northern Italy for its authenticity then be careful if you stay in the south to avoid any of the hotels that you would expect the chain coach trips/jetsave excursion plans to stay at unless you like that sort of thing!  Just my personal opinion, but I would take a few extra days in Rome or Venice any time.  Pompeii and Herculaneum are absolutely fascinating, as is a trip to Vesuvius so i dont want to be overly negative of course...
