Job prospects for biophysicist post doc

Hi does anyone know whether there will be any job prospects for a postdoctoral biophycisist/biochemist in Geneva? My partner is considering moving to Geneva as he likes Switzerland, does anyone know a good place to find academic/research jobs in Switzerland or if there are grants available for foreign nationals to conduct research in Switzerland? Thanks in advance.

Just apply directly to the research groups you are interested in. For most projects its quite simple here when it comes to funding - the profs can chose whoever they want. So find a research group you like and impress the professor. Simple.

Actually a lot of jobs might be "hidden", like the prof is just thinking about publishing an advert etc. I would suggest to go to the website of the universities in Switzerland and then contact the professors of the research groups you are interested directly.

Hi reka, just a thought, why he should be engaged with a student permit B for a post-doc position? Is not this meant to be real research job? Just curious.

Permit B is a standard permit for work here, its not a student permit.

As a side note, post-doc is concisdered a student in Switzerland. Its probably the only country in the world, but it doesnt really mean anything, post-doc will have a normal employment contract and pay taxes and everything. But on his university card it will say student. So he would have all the student benefits but be treated as a non student professional by the government.

Actually, post-docs have a  B permit with an observation, something like "formation avec activite". But as the others said, this works just as fine and we pay taxes as normally and have our salaries as the others.

And although i found my position here through telejobs.ch, it's true that the easiest way is just to contact directly the professors. sometimes they have no "declared" open position, but if they get interested by the person, they will find funds to hire.

Exactly. Or they might be preparing a new project with a post-doc position in near future.

Thats nothing to do with it being B or him being student. Its because it says on the permit, for anyone who works at uni here, that the permit is tied to the activity. So if you want to change the profession you need to apply for a new permit.

Andrew, this is not correct.

I know because I had a student B permit. Which is totally different from the B permit you get if the employer asks for it.

The student permit is useless. It cannot be changed to get a normal job and the years don't even if you want to ask for a C permit later on.

This is of course the point of view of a non-swiss non-eu.

Sofia, if you have the legal right to work in Switzerland things are much easier. That's probably the first thing to check before looking for a job here. If you don't and you come here for a post-doc you might be forced to leave once your contract is over. It all depends on your nationality and it is something to consider very carefully.

Good luck!

I am sorry to say this again but this is not correct either (AFAIK).

B permits (with "activite lucrative" i.e for work) are not tied to your activity anymore. You can change employers without asking for permission or having to get a new permit.

Cheers,

Leo
