Just arrived and need to do a big shop - France the best option?

Hello,
My family (we have two daughters aged 3.5 and 18 months) arrived in Switzerland on Sunday. We're staying in a temporary apartment and need to do a huge shop getting all the basics in, plus meat. We are in Nyon and have access to a car, so is France the best option for us?

I know there's a Carrefour in central Divonne, is there a hypermarket anywhere near the border?

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Yeah, France is cheaper. And opening hours are better (typically until 8 throughout the week and on Sunday morning)

I don't know about close to Nyon, but we do most of our shopping in Ferney-Voltaire (behind Geneva Airport); at Carrefour or Leclerc.

I should also mention the markets around Geneva for cheap vegetables and local products: Saturday morning in Ferney and Sunday morning in Divonne.

The Carrefour in Divonne is a good start.  Be careful when crossing the border.

Or Pass the border at CERN/Meyrin, I've seen it manned 3 to 4 times in the last year, and that was at night. Surprised Not that i'm encouraging grocery smuggling or anything...

Agreed.  Also Mategnin is rarely manned (near the E.Leclerc).

kevin,

A trolley full in Switzerland will cost you a couple of hundred CHF at the very least...

Would advise you shop in France for a 30% discount on most goods.

The border police are interested in Meat and Butter mainly... which is a shame, since steak here costs 80CHf per kilo compared to 40Euro /kg or cheaper in France... however carrefour meat (esp pork) doesnt keep beyond a couple of days so freeze it, if you dont use it immediately.

There are numerous unmanned border posts, but the border police have a right to stop you within 10km of the border, which in the summer BBQ months they often do to check the meat smugglers and increase their christmas fund.  Just a heads up.
