Kale ?

Hello everybody,

any suggestions where to find Kale, aka Dinosaur Kale in Geneva?
Locally it s called «Chou plume»
"Chou frisé non pommé” or “Langue d'alouette”
not to be confound with the standard round chou frisé.

No success on the Farmers' market…
I used to get it from a farmer out in Fribourg, but their tiny stocks are épuisé…

Thank you in advance

Worth trying the street markets in Geneva, depending where you live:

Tuesdays in Paquis: Market selling fruit, vegetables and manufactured goods. From 06:30 to 13:00 at Place de la Navigation or
Plainpalais: Local market for fruit, vegetables and manufactured goods. From 06:30 to 13:00 at Plaine de Plainpalais or
St Jean: Fruit and vegetable market from 08:00 to 13:00 at Rue Bleuet (also on Thursday)

Saturdays in Carouge: General produce market from 06:30 to 14:00 at Place du Marché

Sundays in Plainpalais: Local market for fruit, vegetables and manufactured goods. From 06:30 to 13:00 at Plaine de Plainpalais

Kale is also available on occasion on some street market shelvess in small villages on french frontally zone like Gaillard and Ville la Grand.

In addition to Milord's suggestions, you can try the markets in Divonne (Sunday mornings) and Ferney (Saturday mornings).

Kale is less known in the french speaking areas - there is an article about LE kale in Elle France, bringing it out as the new essential food…

After talking with several farmers, I learned that they produce small quantities only and it is a veggie which was almost forgotten about. It seems they sow it in June and harvest after the first frosty nights. They say harvesting it before the frost does not bring out the best taste; what brings me to the fact that in California (been living for too long there) - How is it possible it tastes so great there - all year round?

One of the places where we could hopefully find it is the Ferme de Budé www.ferme-de-bude.ch, but they are closed for winter break until the 18 january.

More info to come.

I am so glad that you posted this..  I have been looking for it for three years here and have never seen it.  I brought some seeds back with me this summer from California but didn't get to plant the garden this year.   Please keep us posted on when and where it is sold.  I am in Vaud not far from Gland. But I will go anywhere to get it.  It had been the staple of my diet, in juices and smoothies and cooked when living in California.  It is the number one most nutrient rich food! I really miss it.

Friends!
One of my students found kale at Manor! Run, run, run, grab as fast as you can
Called choux plumes.

And also here is a website with organic kale: http://www1.vitaverdura.ch/produits/show/id_products_infos/643

And lastly I found kale at the veggie garden in Prangins National Museum - probably the not most legal way to go…

By the way, the first picture posted was not Kale, but Cavolo Nero cabbage.
Kale was planted in all the many parks in Lausanne last year, and there might still be some.

I took some (along with some flat-leaf parsley) from the garden behind the Casino de Montbenon.

I figure, if they're going to have a permaculture theme, a bit of responsible trimming is to be encouraged.

Try Botanic Bio Market, Gaillard, FR, 10 min from Geneva. I found it there though the choice always depends on the season.

Hi all. I spoke to the folks at Manor Geneva and they said that they stocked kale as an experiment in late January (imported from Holland!) and they threw 95% of it away. He said that it wasn't likely that they would choose to stock it anytime soon.

No joy either at the Sunday market in Plainpalais today.

Has anyone had any success??

MIGROS should also have them. Maybe in the the largest shops (Balexert, Vibert ), as it appears in their cooking magazine:

http://www.saison.ch/fr/magazine/produit-de-la-saison/chou-plume/

Otherwise, buy seeds ... Smile

I've been looking for that, too, but didn't succeed. I finally imported (a high quality) canned version from Germany. You can order it from amazon: http://www.amazon.de/Heinrich-L%C3%BCders-Gr%C3%BCnkohl-800-GR/dp/B009GEYWM8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1363091319&sr=8-3

After the order I found that a few allotments in Vernier close to the migros there grow some. Maybe you can ask them if they sell some to you.

Sometimes ( If I am not wrong ) they are using some varieties as a decor plant in the pots in the center :D ....but that one is probably a very chemical one. Best is to buy organic seeds ( i am sure in organic shops as Bio Frais in St. Julien they should have ) and grow anywhere it gets :)

Update for this year: At least before christmas I saw it on the market in Rive on Saturdays, the vendor is close to the parking garage entry (Benoit?).  He gets it from Basel and said that he will be selling it as long as his supplier delivers it.
