All,
Not that I enjoy putting this kind of message on a forum. Recently friends had a rather poor experience. To keep it short be very careful with what you are saying at a doc practice and be aware if you are hospitalized....
- They rent servers at a pharmacist association the ofac. Some servers are in Zurich / backups and some in Geneva.
- The storage period for each files is of 20 years. That means your data will hang around the country for 20 years...
- They do not give back medical files to patients as they state that it is their files and not patients' files.
Archives can cost a lot so why doing this? Here are the answers we received around Geneva.
- for hospital publications
- for insurance purposes, this is not correct as patients cannot sue if they have not got the medical file anymore.
- simply useless and put patients confidentiality at high risks
So Sorry and be very cautious...

If you are a EU national, your data is strongly protected by the GDPR, and you have the right of filing a complaint with your national Data Protection Authority.
The list of DPAs is here.

Thank you I will tell them. What they have been told is that under the Swiss laws medical centres/hospitals have superior rights and they can do that.

The reason is the extension of the limitation period. It was extended to 20 years on 1 January 2020 (https://www.bj.admin.ch/ejpd/fr/home/actualite/news/2018/2018-11-07.html)
One can always ask for a copy of one's medical file.
