Ladies, make up related question

Ok, so this may seem like a really stupid and trivial question, but anybody have any idea where I can get a lipstick sealer in Geneva? None of the stores or brands here sell it, they only have the long lasting ones. I checked on ebay and there have a few, only problem is that they take too long to deliver (Actually it's not too bad, but I need it by next Monday) and in some cases it's too expensive.

Any tips/advice? Smile

Just a "home made" tip for longer lasting lip colour. how long your makeup/lip colour lasts depends a lot on what you did before you applied the lipstick. A lot of ladies forget the simple reasoning that oil and water don't mix. So if you moisturize with an oil-based moisturizer you can't expect your water-based foundation to last. So make sure moisturizer and foundation match. It will slide off regardless of the sealant.

Here is what I do for longer lasting lip colour

1. Gently exfoliate lips

2. Pat dry and use moisturizer on lips

3. Dab foundation on lips (remember to match oil for oil and water for water as explained above) and smooth with middle finger

4. Apply one coat of lipstick

5. Press a "Single" ply of toilet roll paper on your lips

6. Apply your loose powder over your lips through the paper with a small eyeshadow brush. Try not to go outside the line of the lips. This gives a very fine coating of powder to your lips

7. Remove the toilet roll paper and apply one more coat of lipstick.

8. And finally (YES I was getting to that), hold a can of lacquer hairspray arms length away, close your eyes and squirt one quick pump of hairspray on the lower part of your face.

This should make your lipstick last for a few hours with no need retouch. I know it works all day at work for me.

I know it sounds like a long process but it's not really. Let me know how you get on.

I have never been able to find a satisfactory lipstick sealer in CH so always stock up when I’m in the UK, getting it from Superdrug or Boots, etc.

I could let you have an unopened flacon of “Lipstay” at cost price if you can collect it from the Eaux-Vives.  Registered postal dispatch would also be possible.  So please send me a p.m. if interested.

Wow!! Thanks a lot for your reply Janet. But I must confess, I very rarely use make up and when I do it's mostly only eyeliner and lipstick. I guess the sealer would have been a quick and easy solution for me.

Question though, is it safe to use hairspray on you lips if you're going to eat right after?I do have an eye primer, and I've heard of some women using it on their lips to make the lipstick hold for longer.

Also, if anybody knows of any stores that might sell lipstick sealer in France (Annemasse, Fernex, Divonne or any of the close by places) please do let me know.

As already mentioned, I buy my sealer, which is called “Lipcote”,  in the UK because I have never been able to find it anywhere in CH or in France.

Rochana, so far I have not had any problems with my skin. Using moisturiser and foundation is a good barrier, not to talk of the 2 layers of lipstick is. Not to boast but I use the hairspray trick for my makeup quite a lot as it's paraben-free and I have good skin in my forties! Having oily skin does have it's upside! :)

Eye primer smooths uneven skin texture, I can't say it makes makeup last longer but it does a give a smoother appearance and helps eyeshadows blend better. But exfoliating is just as effective and doesn't cost much. Using a little of your normal daily facial scrub works a treat to smoothen your lips

As for eating, I wouldn't advise eat straight after using hairspray. Give it at least an hour and avoid licking your lips, as that doing that would remove your lipstick anyway no matter what sealant you use. Drink with a straw if you can.

If the hairspray causes you concern. just do steps 1 to 7, you will still see a marked difference in longevity as opposed to applying lipstick on bare lips

As Ritchie has advised, get Lipcote/Lipstay from the UK. A lot of folks travel over the weekend, if you have a friend,  ask them to get these products for you.

I hear that "Model In A Bottle" is a good make up setting spray but I haven't seen it in any shops here either.

Good luck!

Indeed, the pressure on women to use all this stuff starts in childhood ( check out toy make up sets for little girls) and then have a look at how heavily promoted it is by women's magazines. When I am sitting at work in the middle of a conversation between my colleagues about which foundation to use,I almost feel guilty for not using any( but also look at their lovely young faces and wonder why on earth they DO.

But guys, watch out.....it is slowly creeping into your culture too,as cosmetic companies are learning they can make big bucks out of you as well( have you noticed how, suddenly,it is important for men to moisturize, exfoliate etc etc?)

So,who knows,in a couple of decades, you too may be agonising over how to find the right foundation.......

Farzam and Casuistik, you both came on here to satisfy your curiosity! Well, welcome the world of make up :) Your comments made me ROFL :)

buzzcocks, I agree, there's always been that "pressure" but personally I've actually always liked makeup.  As a young 'un, I loved  colours and as a grown-up I appreciate both the science and artistry of cosmetology. Everything is not for everybody. You needn't feel guilty about not using make up but there is nothing wrong with a bit of male grooming either. Moisturize and exfoliate away, boys!!

Janet:

Good point. However the gents already have been pressurizing the cosmetology industry to your own benefit when starting to buy  hair colouring products.

Many women start buying men hair coloring lotions 'cause they are up to 40 per cent cheaper than women's in general, except for those using henna hair color. Same savings apply to mechanical razors and razor blades. What a saving for you ladies, thanks to men, for once.

We are indeed satisfied to help our counterparts.

Rochana - if you're struggling with the powder and hairspray (ah! that took me back to my teenage disco years!!) just go and buy "Maybelline Super Stay 24 hour" lippy - it does exactly what it says on the tin and if you're a lazy slob like me, or you're just too pissed to take off your make up - it will still be there in the morning!

To Janet - Brilliant Post!!  Please please please, post a "make up tips and tricks" evening - for women AND men (although I'm still trying to work out why I would buy men's hair colour?!?!?).Cool
