Learning to drive - Anyone done it here?
My other half wants to add to the traffic chaos of Geneva and learn to drive!!  I´d be very grateful if anyone could share their experience of the learning process in Geneva or Vaud:

1. Most importantly - Can the written exam be in Spanish or German?

2. Can the instructor be in Spanish, German or English?

3. What is the minimum hours required and the process in general?

4. Can you recommend a good instructor on points 1 & 2 above?

Many thanks to anyone who takes the time to help and advise.

Dean :)

Just a suggestion.

I noted that Joseph is now using the car....maybe he can teach the Mrs.

That would no doubt save a few quid.

Cheers :)

Hey,

I happen to know a very good intructor, Mr Djene 078 772 20 40. He's with Ecole Auto de Servette and the car is very nice too a BMW Series 1 2 liter gasoline engine.

He's originally from Macedonia I think and he speaks good French. I'm not sure about otther languages, you can check directly with him.

Anyways I hoe it helps.

Thanks Catalin - appreciate the recommendation.

Also Mimi - Thanks for making it clear (although I did feel like you were telling me off as well for wanting to do it in minimum time!) - Don't worry... we'll do as many hours as needed!  Thanks! :)

And finally... could people not pose "new" questions on this thread... There's plenty of Forum space to start a new topic!! :satisfied:

Thanks Mimi - I don't think we'll need to learn French to learn to drive, not unless we need all the swear words to curse the local drivers who tend to swerve into your braking space to gain 0.002 second advantage, or the ones that speed up to block you from entering a perfectly wide enough space that you indicate to move into (ah...that's why the locals don't indicate because they know they will be prevented from making that manouvre!!  Mmmm is that in the exam?)  But thanks for the tip - Plus we have our sights set on passing in a little bit less than two years... I think 6 months would be reasonable.

Thanks also for the info on theory, German written theory will be fine.  Instruction in Spanish, German or English also ok.

Thanks everyone else for your contributions, I think we have enough collective info now to launch this big project and contribute to the traffic chaos!  Cheers all very much! :D

Actually... I said I'd buy her a car when she passes... maybe this 2 year learning strategy isn't a bad idea after all...!!

To be honest, 6 months sounds like a very reasonable time frame. The theory exam is straightforward, and as long as you take enough lessons, and get adequate practice (esp. parking and manoeuvres), you should be ok. I had a French speaking instructor, but I'm sure others can recommend English speakers. And it is true that the Servette school has a poor reputation.
