Living in France - some questions
Hello,

Due to the despair involved in looking for a flat in Geneva, I'm also considering France. However, as I won't be driving, I'd like to live somewhere with reasonable transport to Geneva, and Plainpalais in particular, where I work. Hence, I would rather be on the south side of the French border.

I was hoping there were several areas not far from the border which were not too far from the outer reaches of swiss transport (ie - I cycle a mile or two, then get a tram or bus to Geneva).

Areas I have in mind (or should I say were recommended to me) are Collonges-sous-Saleve and Saint-Julein-en-Genevois. Does anyone know much about the transport to Geneva from these or any other areas which might allow me to get to Plainpalais in under an hour?

All help much appreciated.

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Forget St Julien and Collonges sous Salève, you will desperately need a car if you live there, and it's too far away to cicle to the border.
The closest is the Gaillard & Annemasse area. There are public transportation in the agglomeration and the tram at the Moillesulaz border will take you directly to Plainpalais.

It depends on the area. Some places are really hideous, some are OK. It's up to you to see where you feel at ease and where you have transportations / shops, etc.
Just one place to avoid though: area La Perriere in Annemasse (not very safe!!)

Why don't you check Ferney Voltaire as well? It's just on the border and it's a nice place to live :) there are buses 3-5 times an hour and it takes around 20min to get to Cornavin. Plus the airport is very close in case you travel :)

However I think it's a good idea to live in France. Geneva is just horribly expensive! And the appartaments are so difficult to get!!

Good luck!

Actually if you work in Plainpalais then St Julien is great, you can take the bus D, either from St Julien centre, or cycle the 5 minutes to the Perly crossing and take it once in Switzerland. It goes directly to Jonction, which is only a 10 min walk to Plainpalais. You do not need a car if you live there, there are 2 large markets in St Julien and you can get pretty much everything you need in town. Its alos much nicer than Annemasse.

Well, I had an idea that I am the only one who cannot find a place, what a surprise.

I have a possibility to rent a big flat in St. Genis.

In that case I would have 3 rooms to sub-rent for 450 EUR each (wifi included).

It is situated 50 m to a bus stop, but the problem is that the bus is leaving once an hour.

I was very afraid that I would not find 3 desperados to live in that flat and I would just have to pay enormous amount of money.

What do you think?
