Living in Geneva - Working in Nyon

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could share any experience:

I'm living in Geneva (airport area) and my current work place is in Geneva centre. Unfortunately my company will be moving to Nyon in May. In order to use public transport, I have 2 options:

1) by feet to tram - tram to Cornavin - train to Nyon (a bit compicated)

2) car to airport - train to Nyon (not an option due to unbelievably high parking subscription costs at the airport)

The easiest option for me would be going by car (on A1 autoroute via Ferney). Now I've been listening to terrifying stories about traffic jams concerning people COMING TO GENEVA for work. Since I'd drive to the other direction (leaving GVA in the morning and returning in the evening) - can anyone tell me how the traffic situation is on that route? Of course it's different every day, however, I would really appreciate any experiences you might have. I need to make a decision soon, since in case of using the car I need to apply for a parking at our new offices.

Thanks in advance so much for your help.

Have a sunny afternoon,

Stefanie

Theyre right... the traffic is coming INTO Geneva... not out.

It should take you 20 mins max to drive in the morning from the Ferney autoroute entrance to Nyon.

Ditto on the way back into Geneva from Nyon.

You also always have the option of the Route Suisse if per chance the Autoroute is blocked due to an accident.

Depends also where exactly in Nyon you have to get to. For the outskirts, a car is much better as the highway is close; for the centre, arguably the train wins, depending also on your parking options. For the train, get a monthly 'abonnement de parcours' or at least a half-price card.

Good evening,

Thank you all so much for your comments!! By going via Ferney I mean that I will enter the A1 after the borders of Ferney, meaning that I won't need to  pass the tunnels I think you're talking about.

Regarding the position and parking situation: i don't know the exact address yet, but I was told that the building is situated between the highway and the train station (i know, that's not very precise....). The good thing is that we have a free parking for all employees right below the office.

I'll probably try using my car (at least in summer) and in case of total despair :))) The train will still be there...

Thanks again and have a great evening,

Stefanie

Car should be okay, as written above you're going in the oppositie direction of the traffic.

Depends of course of your working hours, if you can leave a bit earlier or later than most people, it'll be easier.

I think you should try to go by car 1st, then if for some reason it doesn't work well, check for other options. It's better to do it in that order, so you don't buy a 1 year train pass for nothing.

I live in Geneva and work in Rolle and travel by car most days.  The frequency of the train service to Rolle (stops only once per hour) makes it an inflexible option.

Generally speaking I do not encounter any delays in the mornings, there have been more delays on the return drive as it appears more people travel at the same time (between 18:00 and 19:00) towards Geneva in the evenings, although traffic usually moves smoothly.

I don't know if someone has already mentioned it but you don't need to take the tram to Cornavin to take the train.

At the airport there is a train station too and you may find a train going directly from Geneva airport to Nyon. If not you would need to change at Cornavin.

The train from the airport to Coranvin is about 7 minutes.

Have you considered biking to the airport and taking the train there? There are actually bike lanes going to the airport but of course it depends where you live exactly. It's often faster than the car and you get your daily exercise at the same time :-)
