London areas
Hi all,

I know this is a website about Geneva and Geneva people, so maybe I am a little bit out of topic... but I know many people here are from the UK and many others lived in London, so I thought to try asking.

I'm looking for a place to live in London and I've never been there before, so I don't know much about the areas, and London is huge.

I was looking in particular in Bermondsey, Finchley Road, Kilburn High Road, Camden. Do you think this are safe and nice areas to live? I would like a lively and safe part of the town, not too far from the city where I will work.

Any tip is very welcome.

Hi Frederica,

I lived in London for 8 months recently and I lived in Finchley Road. I liked it there as it was safe and you have a big Sainsbury's close by as well as 3 tube stations. It takes a short time to get to the centre and you can even take a bus. I wouldn't recommend Kilburn; I worked there half time and it is quite dodgy. West Hampstead is lovely, but maybe a bit more pricey. Bermondsey, I don't really know much but I don't think it has a good opinion. Camden is hip and quite alternative. I liked Fulham, Chelsea and Bayswater too.

Oh how I miss London!!!

Your best bet might be to have a look at the tube line with a station closest to your office and seeing which areas in London it connects you with. Commuting in London can be a nightmare and you really want to keep it to a minimum.

When looking for accommodation there I think it's a good idea to just pick one or two areas and focus on them. You will find something where ever you look (depending on your budget of course) but like you said it's a big city, so spreading your net too wide is pointless.

In my opinion, Bermondsey is not such a nice area. I lived around Camden, Kentish Town, Tufnell Park, Belsize park and Chalk Farm in North London and I'd really recommend those areas. If you can afford it, Primrose Hill is close by and is nice (expensive and posh!). These areas are typical of London though in that you can have really nice streets right beside not so nice ones so you do need to have a walk around and check them out, you can't really generalize.

Then pop into local Real Estate offices and also pick up Loot magazine every day (and get an A-z f you don't have one).

Good luck!

thank you very much to both, the north areas you mentioned are the ones where I'm focusing my research.

And what about the Fulham broadway / Baron's court area? do you know it?

Hi Federica,

I lived in Finchley for several years and feel it to be one of the safest areas, and very reasonable for accomodation compared to other ares closer to the city. Its only disadvantage according to Londoners is that the travel card costs a little more being in Zone 4, and it takes a little longer to get into the city, but I never found that a problem myself.I have a friend who lives in the Fulham Broadway Barons Court area - tht's extremely lively, loads of bars and restaurants, a big exhibition centre and very close to the city, it has a real buzz and a bit of an edge, but it didn't feel as safe to me as Finchley. Good luck!
