Love locks / Padlocks <3

My Parents have just returned from Italy and were telling me about this bizzare tendancy they notticed of padlocks being adorned all over metal fences on bridges and various tourist sites in Italy.... they had no idea why.... I imidiatly wiki-ed it and found the answer!!!

"Love padlocks (also known as Love Locks) are a custom by which sweethearts affix padlocks to a fence or similar public fixture to symbolize their everlasting love"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_padlocks

Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? or done it?

Or seen one in Geneva?

i don't know where it started, but I remember seeing many, many bridges in Moscow that were just like that. All over the place and HUNDREDS of locks.

I haven't seen one in Geneva, no.

Rome as well had a specific pilon on a bridge that was so full of padlocks that they had to keep cutting them off to keep the pilon from snapping.

This in Rome specifically came after a movie where two lovers do exactly that.

And I have seen thousands of the things in South Korea and the base of the N Seoul Tower, but I doubt that the Koreans have seen that Italian movie... :-D

Actually, they are quite common in Italy, and can be spotted on many places near a river or by the sea.

You write your lover's name and yours on the padlock, lock it, and throw the key in the water.

The Omegaman has uncovered the ritual . . . it's all in "thowing away the key".

Guess that excludes using a combination lock !

Hello,

I have seen quite a few of them on my bicycle tour when I passed Калининград (the russian enclave - formerly Königsberg). Attached you will find a picture of a bridge there.

Cheers

I agree! What happens if you break up with your OH? Go and find the lock and open it somehow?

Well the key is thrown into the water. There are serveral possibilties (depending on your personality)

1. You dive into the water and try to find the key (might work for short term relationships only)

2. When you have finished splitting the bed, the table and all other things with your chainsaw you continue with the Love Lock

3. You have saved a spare key as a backdoor and just use it

4. You just try to forget about it and never pass by that bridge again

5. You do not break up relationships

6. You choose the next partner with the same name - so you can keep the Love Lock

7. You have your Ex choose a partner with your name - and leave it to him/her to continue your old live with a new partner

8. You change your name - so you will not be bothered again with that old story

What kind of person are you? Wink
