It's a holiday right? I know the schools are closed, what else is open or closed?

Shops? Activities for kids etc?

It depends where you work. It is not a "public holiday" , in the building business it is a "jour chomé" which means it's a non-paid holiday. I think this goes back to when workers had the right to protest on the 1st May.

It's a day off in public administration (incl schools), but not for the rest, so shops etc. are open.

It used to be a half hooliday in Zurich but I don't know about now.  However, I do remember once being paid double time because I agreed to work on the afternoon of May Day.  I had to walk all the way home though because the trams weren't running so some of my hard-earned cash went on shoe repairs.
