Meditation: Vipassana

http://www.vimalakirti.org/?page_id=575

Wondering whether anyone on the site has had experience with Vipassana, here in Geneva or anywhere in Switzerland or neighboring France.  As I understand it, Vipassana does not charge for meditation courses.

Is this correct? Would be interested in any suggestions.  Thanks.

Those I know do not charge: they work on a donation basis. From what I have seen, they are neither dogmatic, nor proselyter. They have a 10 days introductory course at their Dhamma Sumeru Meditation Centre in St-Imier. They do not ask you to join or to give up your beliefs, just to abide by their rules for the duration of the course (do not talk, eat vegetarian, do not kill living beings, meditate). As far as I am concerned, this is one of the least sectary movement I heard of, but I may be wrong, of course.

I met recently someone who has done both Vipassana and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction course.  He recommended the Vipassana over the more western-based technique which has its roots in more eastern practices.

Hey, I can also recommend the dhamma sumeru centre in Montreal Soleil (above St Imier). It's free, donations are optional in case you had positive results and want to give that opportunity to future students.

I am also looking for people in the Geneva/Nyon area who would like to get together once per week to sit and practise vipassana and metta together.

Hey, I joined one session during xmas in Czech in 2014. Yes, the insitituation is very organized and the ten days training is very very challenging. Everything is free, but you need to buy your own ticket to get there. During the ten days, you are not allowed to talk to anybody, even eye contacts with your classmates are not allowed, you need to submit books, pens, mp3, cellphones, money, snacks, notebooks, computres on the first day of your arrival. So basically in that ten days, you will not read, listen to music, communicate with anybody, while only do the meditation.

The effect is very good, it really help you to focus and improve your abiliy to concentrate, maybe help to achieve the flow status.

But this needs practise, if you come back home, dont do any meditation daily, soonly you will lost those what you have achieved.

They have many centers around the world. You need to book early as they are very popular, especially for the centers based in Europe.
