Moving second hand furniture into Geneva

Hi all,

I have just moved into Geneva and I have question regarding getting furniture into Geneva.

In february I will have some extra furniture brought to me by relatives from the Netherlands. They will probably hire a van to drive the stuff to me.

Now what is the best thing to do. Just drive to the border and hope customs won't stop the van or is there something you can do in advance to make sure that there are no issues. I have heard that as long as you can prove that it is indeed second hand furniture you only need to show a receipt of when the goods were bought.

If there are any other options please let me know. Obviously I want to make sure that we don't have to do to much paperwork whilst at the same time don't want to be "busted"...

Thanks in advance for your replies.

When you moved to Geneva, did you go to customs and declare all the things that you were taking into Switzerland? Because on that form you can state that there will be more coming. Otherwise you might just pretend that this your first time and fill in the form. More info here: http://www.ezv.admin.ch/zollinfo_privat/zu_beachten/00352/index.html?lang=en

However I am not sure what will happen if you try to cross the border with a van without going to the customs office. I did it the official way, but even before entering Switzerland (at Bardonnex) I was already stopped by the French customs and they wanted to know what I was doing with the van and where I was going. The process at the Swiss customs took me 30 minutes or so. I had filled in all the forms beforehand and they were only interested in how much alcohol I brought and if I had any drugs. After checking the van for 30 seconds everything was fine, I got a stamp and could continue into Geneva.

Hi Laurent,

Thanks for your quick response.

Unfortunately the first batch of my stuff arrived today in Geneva and will be delivered tomorrow (goods were declared today). So can't add anything to the form anymore.

I guess I'll have a look at the forms you linked. Might be the easiest way...

cheers.
