Moving with Fido
During my time in Geneva I have aquired a dog, but now I'm moving back to Montreal and have no idea how to go about flying him over. Does anyone have any advice, recommendations or personal experience stories to share which can help me figure this out?

It would be much appreciated! Thanks

Best bet is to check with Air Canada if they carry animals on the GVA-MTL flight. If you can avoid a stop over someplace it is best. You will need a plastic crate for him (airline approved model). Ideally, you would fly on the same plane.

Here is the link for importing animals into Canada.

I just had a look at the photo since you are holding the dog. This is the mini model. Some airlines allow you to carry the dog on the plane in a small dog carrier (if the dog is less than 6 kg weight??). This would avoid it traveling in the cargo area.

Once again, best to check on the AC website first then give them a call if it is not clear.

Hi!

I hope I am doing this correctly, just signed up to this forum today;-) We'll see.

I work at the federal veterinary office (in Switzerland), so get this question all the time. Unfortunately, I do not have the information as regards to what is necessary to enter Canada. What I can say, however, is that it is important you contact the veterinary authorities, as requirements can change...and if you do not have all the required papers, your dog may not be allowed to enter Canada.

Canadian embassy in Bern (they are sometimes helpful, but might at least be able to give you the necessary contact details): Email - [email protected], www.suisse.gc.ca; www.switzerland.gc.ca Tel - 031/357 32 00

or

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (http://www.agr.gc.ca/index_e.php?s1=help-aide&s2=contact)

or

the Canadian Food inspection agency: http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/tools/feedback/commene.shtml

The airlines will be able to give you information regarding travelling, so might IATA (International Air Transport Association, www.iata.org/index.htm), but they mostly do not know about regulations entering the country, so I would definitely contact the authorities.

Hope this helps and you have a safe trip back!

Cheers,

Maya
