If the person is really good and qualified, might have additional work for them.
Many thanks!

Thanks! I was actually going to ask for "warnings" too as I've heard there are some scams out there - but decided to stay positive :) this is very helpful.

We used the service of this handy man for all kinds of things around the house, and he's great, reliable, and affordable:
Andreas 079.456.08.04 (speaks French & German, no English).
Ask him if he also knows about plumbing. I suspect if it's basic plumbing then he can do it, but if it's 'advanced' plumbing then he may not be the right guy. However, he'll probably be able to direct you to the right person.
Bon chance!

PS - the crazy prices the 'formal' companies charge are not a real scam, it's more like day light robbery. They price works this way: a large fixed part just for coming over, and then a variable part - with a min of 1 hour - for their work. So even if they work for 30 secs, they charge you an arm and a leg. If you can find someone like Andreas, it's far better.

Andreas does - in a great way - almost anything around the house. The only prob is that you need to explain to him in french or German what you need...

In the end we used a handy man for most of the small work that we could 'restore to its original state' and was not likely to cause damage and paid and arm and a leg to install the washing machine and dishwasher .... better this then sorry later (trust me a friend of mine had a problem with her floor and that little certificate saved her a couple of thousands chf ...)

goo taht they finally lowered the charges to a more reasonable amount, but I still wonder if they really have the right to charge you a full hour for a 12 min work AND the travel time.
To compare, last time I called my plumber, he charged me CHF 60.- for half an hour work (25 mins actual time, so it's OK) and CHF 60.- travel time, which is fine as well.

I had a few things to be installed and a few domestic / home matters to be resolved when I moved to my new apartment, and at the recommendation of a friend my first point of call was the PROFESSIONAL SERVICES listings under the City Guide here on Glocals.
It solved so many problems for me and I ended up being a great deal happier not only in being able to get things done but at very reasonable costings too.
Additionally 1 point worth noting for those being advised by their Regie that item "must be installed/connected by approved contractor"? the Regie receive a 5% payment from the duly appointed contractor that they suggest to you? something I feel people should be aware of, you are potentially paying for the contractors recommendation by the Regie?
I have been told in England this is called You scratch my back I will scratch yours?

We had been told this story about the Regie receiving money from companies too by several friends who have lived in Geneva for while. And that it is not Law or Insurance necessary as many of the Local Companies will simply deny liability anyway which ends up in long legal wrangles.
We used the Market Place and found ASSEMBLED4U who came and completed all of our Electric and plumbing installs - furniture assembly plus lots of other odd jobs around our home and we certainly didnt pay anything like some of the prices quoted in previous replies here? Perhaps we were very lucky but would certainly recommend them to anyone. :)
