Need bank account to set up utilities?

Hello everyone!

My family is moving to Geneva on 22 October. We will be living in a semi detached house and will be trying to start the process for setting up utilities (heat, etc) as soon as possible this week given the imminent move. We don't yet have a Geneva bank account though. Can anyone advise on whether this will be a problem?

Thanks in advance!!

You can pay for utilities via the Post Office, either in cash or through a Post Office account, which is easy to set up, especially as you have a UN contract.  You can continue to pay this way or change to a bank standing order later on.

However, the owner or agency managing your accommodation may have some preference as to how and when utilities should be paid so perhaps check this with the person who is negotiating the rental contract.

You’ll find people who handle rentals here are very used to newcomers who do not have a Swiss bank account on arrival and they are usually very helpful.  Also, you can always consult your HR Dept. if you need more explanations or advice.

Best wishes, R.
