Need to buy a car
Hi everybody,

I am currently living in Paris & will soon work and live in Switzerland (Neuchatel).

I will have to buy a car. I do not know if it is better to buy a car here in France or directly in Switzerland. What do you think?

Regards,

Sébastien.

salut welcome. you are certainly better off buying one locally - less hassle with paperwork and easier for maintenance

Yes maybe less hassle with paperwork but is it not much more expensive in Switzerland?

Hi Seb,

My suggestion would be to buy a car in Switerland, for multiple reasons (we can have a chat on that topic if you want) :

1. Taxes are lower in Switzerland than in France (7.6 vs 19.6)

2. If you buy a car in France, you have to all the papers (and pay for it) and you'll need to do this again in Switzerland

3. You also have to declare your car at the customs and YOU WON'T BE ALLOWED TO SELL YOUR CAR WITHIN THE 6 MONTHS OR 1 YEAR (or you have to pay a tax)

4. Insurance are also cheaper in Switzerland

I moved from France to Switzerland and buy (by leasing) my car in Switzerland. A way much more simple :)

If I am not mistaken for a car or anything else for that matter to be imported into Switzerland free of duty and tax as part of your personal belongings you would have had to owned it for a minimum of SIX months before your move. You can of course check this with Swiss Customs.

If you are moving soon I don't think that the French car is an option even if you wanted to.

Thanks for your answer. All people I interviewed said me the same thing. I have to buy in Switzerland. It would be a pleasure to discuss with you by chat. Because even if I have to buy a car there, I would like to explore which kind of car is better there & how does it work for papers. My email is [email protected].

Regards,

Sébastien.

I would add one more thing. Coming from France, you would tend to automatically think of a diesel car (in 2006 70% of cars sold in FR were diesel). This is not the case in Switzerland where diesel is a more expensive fuel. I think the CH percentage of diesel cars is about a third.

Also here we tend to commute much shorter distances or use public transit which is very good. This significantly reduces the "need" for diesel. Fuel also tends to be less expensive in Switzerland (but does vary based on the Euro/CHF exchange).

All that to say you will see many more gas cars for sale and it tends to be the way most people go.
