New glocals event line: CEOs behind the Bar

Hey all,

We're thinking of launching a new glocals event line, and would love to hear what you think of it. Here's the idea.

The overall concept is a business networking evening. It will include:

- entrance toi members age 30+ only
- entrance by pre RSVP only
- held at smaller places for 100-150 people
- the bars will be tended by senior managers of Geneva companies that night, to increase the mingling and break the ice
- there will be background music, but not too loud

That's it. What think - would it fly?

Thanks,

Nir

interesting idea, but i dont think there is a need to to limit ages to +30.

according to this rule i should be - just-  lucky... i wouldnt prejudice people in their 20ies. there are lot of smart, experienced, civil and mature people out there in their 20ies!

but thats only my opinion, one single glocals user... but i can immagine other people think the same!

a good day to all!

hi nir,

this is an excellent idea! it will help breaking the barriers, and envision relationships to the top management differently, to constantly re-invent ourselves with new ways to deal business.

look froward to this, and thank you for the gret idea. best, cd

I think it's a great idea! I would definitely want to join, but unfortunately I can't...... I'm only 28!!

That's why I agree with sevket, but I understand that you want it to be a serious happening. Why don't you rather ask for commitment of the attendees instead of limiting the age?

By the way, I'll be more than happy to help you set it up so do not hesitate to leave me a message if you need help.

Excellent idea. I also understand why you would like to keep it to 30+. Indeed under 30s seem to have a lot more opportunities for such things, it is true that between 30 and 45, once children come into the picture, getting out and about and networking is a little less obvious... Tongue out

So go for it I say !

Hey all,

Thanks for the feedback.

The idea behind a minimum age of 30 is driven by the need to ensure that participants are more or less in a similar business seniority, with an average of 10 years of work experience. For good networking, it's important that both sides can get something out of the contact, which works better when one side is not clearly way more senior than the other.

We might launch the idea with a certain age limit, and then experiment a bit with different age groups.

Hope this makes sense.

Nir

Hi Nir, like a lot the idea but think you may need some sort of theme to bring people together during that evening. I am organizing alumni events from my business school in Geneva and pure networking is difficult when people have little in common (e.g. same school here!). Maybe have a keynote speaker or something on the corporate theme to set the scene, and allow networking from there? Jim

What do you think about the location: should we go for a lux venue like a 5 star hotel, or keep it more relaxed in a local bar / resto that we rent just for us for the evening?

Regarding where to organise it I would recommand a friendly cosy place ... what about for example the leopard lounge (maybe too small), we could reserve it for an "afterwork networking party" ... or maybe another bar ?  do you really think we could reach 100 to 150 people the first time ?

Brilliant idea, that's exactly what Geneva needs. I think it makes sense to target the over-30s bracket in order to differentiate from the graduate student career fairs which already exist here and elsewhere. Please keep us posted on when the first event will be. Thanks, E

regarding leopard lounge that was just a suggestion, it is usually not that crowdy at the "end of the afternoon". Regarding the special services it seems that you know a bit more  than me :)

Re: New glocals event line: CEOs behind the Bar

About the Geneva Lake Execs:

I don't fully remember how I got "hired" in that network, but I believe it was thru an invitation. They are defintely still active, thru a linkedin group and an internations one.  These are typically Directors and up people from major companies as well as smaller entrepreneurs. Drinks are about Networking, getting to know people who share common business interests, etc  You can regularly find them at the Nonolet bar...

So I'm a bit confused about the glocals-group: the posting says "CEO" behind the bar, and then we talk about a more relaxed, laid-back kind of crowd.  Definitely not incompatible, but you might want to be clearer on who is expected to join to discuss what, and what would be the way to select people (other than just age, which might not be the best criteria as highlighted by several posts).

The risk of not doing this, is that you might quickly end up having more job-seekers joining these events, than real business leaders having some business ideas to discuss.  Not bad per se, but let's be clear on the objective. Else, after some time, you will not have any "CEO" behind the bar.  Which might be the original intent - but you might want to just be clearer on the target group and objective.

Just my 2 cents.

Didier

I am totally for the age limit, it could even be raised to 35+ in my opinion. Simply split groups on alternative evening and events. Once for the younger crowd and once for the more matured. Place of venue would then not become an issue which it definitely will be if mixed. Such as comments below. Under 35 might not find the choice of venue of 35+ s trendy or funky enough and vice versa. I would love to attend but would reconsider if its a rowdy event with lots of young hyperactive folks and music way too loud. However, just wondering, where would you find the CEOs willing to tend the bar???? Piano bar of Intercontinental is a nice venue. Terrace bar of Hotel President Wilson or reserve the Nanolet bar mentioned below for the evening......... Interesting idea on the whole.

Will be watching this space and will keep track of final decision :-)

I agreee with Nir, most probably it will be a bit more relax and more open ... I have never heard about them and their website is down ...

regarding leopard lounge that was just a suggestion, it is usually not that crowdy at the "end of the afternoon". Regarding the special services it seems that you know a bit more  than me :)

Sorry Lyrnna, but thats not even an argument ;)

some people here probably believe over 30 are so mature and correct by standard, thats a social myth every younger generation has to face and and prove himself. so what are you afraid of Lyrnna? or are you just being comfortable and taking your age as the only parameter of quality? lol come one!

Lyrnna is proving a great humor - to all the CEOs at the bar, she´s gonna knock you out of your shoes! :))

... well i maybe challenging, but like to be challenge too! so lets make this a special event, by hitting the real spot, the needs and requirements of both sides, Visitors and CEOs, but in an maybe entertaining and certainly a sympathic way!

thats what i envision at least ...none of those standard lame career fairs or business card parties!

p.s. wish u good luck, but don't provide CEO events in Mandarin Hotel, too hot there

p.p.s. more than 100 people in one place - would be even diffucult to hear your own thoughts, even without music

Nir I would definitely recommend to organise the first event soon otherwise we will have to wait until september.

Nir, I like the idea and will attend it if possible.   I also agree with the age limit based on the reasoning of wanting people with commensurate work experience in respect to time.

That being said I say there is an exception list for at least:

Mark Zuckerberg

Joss Stone

Gee, so many people getting excited with Nonolet.  Remember what I said above: Nonolet is the headquarter of the Geneva Lake Executives network.  Mind you, there might be some real CEOs :-)

Onis: indeed, it starts to sound very internations-like :-)

Re: New glocals event line: CEOs behind the Bar
Post 64

All,

Thanks for the feedback. So here are the key points that came up so far, and my thinking on them:

1. Age limit
For starters, we'll go with min age 30 (with exceptions for Mark Zukerburg and Maria), Age is a proxy for work seniority, and maybe later we'll go for years of work or position instead of age.

2. Content during the night
I'm thinking of having the guest CEO Barmen each do a 5 min intro about their company during the night, and the rest is free mingling. What think?

3. Venu
I'll check our Nonolet tomorrow, cos many people here suggested them. However, I think this event might be more "glocals" in a less pretentious outdoor venu. So will also speak to the U-Bobba people, who have a roof top terrace where we did some stuff before with great success.

4. Finding the CEOs to tend the bars
For the first night, i'll rely on my own network. It won't be all CEOs, but it will be all senior managers. The folks I'll pitch this to are the Euro Director of Yahoo CH, the HR Manager for P&G Europe, the Marketing Director for UBS, and the CEO of Holmes Place Europe. They should make for a nice group.

Pls keep the feedback coming - every view is helpful.

Thanks,

Nir

This is not an event I would ever attend but I gotta say I am shocked that an apparently semi smart bunch of folk would think an age limit is appropriate. Age limit is a totally discriminatory tool. Maybe women should be banned from these events also. It has been empirically proven than men are more likely to occupy senior positions within large corporations than women. I am 24 and far more "SENIOR" than many 30 plus year olds in my company.I have met plenty of 30 plus year old people who have the insight of a 5 year old. If you want to organize such pretentious events I would suggest it be done in private, this is NOT cool! In fact I am going to delete my profile in protest.

I don't understand why you are taking it so personally? Nobody says people over 30 are more intelligent. It is a general condition but nothing is written in stone. Maybe you should read again...

I am happy for you that you have a SENIOR position. So show the maturity that goes with the position, and stop insulting because you feel banned from the playground

Re: New glocals event line: CEOs behind the Bar
Post 70

dear nir and all

thank you so much for the initiative, if need any help: i'll be more than happy to help, just drope me a line.

a few comments

1. Age limit: no discrimination, but due to the CEOs level, attendees need a certain level of experience to really get something out of such an event. * 10 years of working experience sounds appropriate. translated in a age limit: it can 30, even 33-35 (my experience). wording stuff, but real experience, technical and management, is mandatory if one wants this mingling process to be positive by all sides.

* CEOs are busy people (even more than senior executives), and when accepting such an "exercice", they need a bit more than having a drink for job seekers, or collecting business cards. they have HR dpt for that. any feedback from others managers' view holds important/interesting information for them. this is how i understand this event, above all

2. Content during the night

* a short presentation of 5mneach will avoid them repeating the same "story" all night long, which is good for everybody. let's ease their task: the underlying intentions of attendees, might be clear but let's make it differently, and innovate: free mingling, exchanges, q&a, business cards, job opportunities, whatever.

international people having a drink with CEOs barmen: i definitely like this way to network: free, relaxed and respectful discussions around business, or not . and the rest will follow.

3. Venue
* no special requirements, just a relaxed place, where people can talk and move around easily. i enjoy both nonolet and lobbies of the mandarin hotel.

4. Finding the CEOs to tend the bars
i look forward to attend and see how they with a bellini, while discussing strategic issues.

hope this help, thank you :)

ps: for the venue, from my little experience of the nonolet: o private terrasse nor corner for more serious / private discussions. we just end up in the street if so, which is a pity.

no matter where you decide to hold the event, the room size matters, and maybe a private terrasse outdoors also matters.

thanks, cd

Re: New glocals event line: CEOs behind the Bar
Post 72

Nir

i have a question: are CEO´s really supposed to do the Barman / Barwoman ? is that the plan? in meaning of giving out beers and drinks? or will they just "stand" behind the bar desk? and others will do the barman job?

how is someone supposed to talk seriously to a Barman more than 2 minutes, if he/she is busy with doing the barman / bar woman job?

before i obviously thought of the event more as: "meet CEOs -AT- the bar".

isnt the bar desk at first a physical obstacle? and if you at least manage to talk to each other, wont it be too hard understand due to noise level in an usual bar envorinment?

i see elementary difficulties in that event concept, but still a huge requirement, like shown in this forum thread only, for that kind of event is a very good reason to do it, if i´d the organizer of this i´d think over the concept again, this has to be well curated event otherwise it will be just a nice try but it wont bring anything to the guests... and you want to attract guest i assume.

what is the final goal for this event? i assume and hope it is the following: the make possible a REAL and authentic and communicative get to gether of guests and CEOs. obviously you dont  get the chance so often to cheer with TL Managers over a beer, wether you are 24 oder 44 i believe.

-

And Nir,

what i dont understand: why do you ask the people´s opinion in the forum if you already seem to know what you want to do and how you want to do it? the result is someone who wasnt your opinion, and expressed himself less dipomatic but quite crude, got deleted. if you read Pioneers quote with the right attention, you´d see some true facts, authentic doubts.

dont take it too personal, hopefully i dont get deleted too -lolll :D - , since we dont know each other in person, but i more and more have the impression that glocals is organized amatorial, obviously you and Oded literally impersonate Glocals so perfectly that its hard to believe this is an international platform for expats with open minds and global spirits, said that, glocals appearse to be just a PLAYGROUND, as quoted once in this thread, and very far from being Professional.

you´re probably surfing glocals on the very personal related level to the people you know from the members, thats also what you call `casual´in your glocas description, but come on! why should people you dont know personally in this forum, dont fit your idea of age, and you dont like his / her opinion, get deleted by you personally, from a so called open minded platform, provided by you to the `public´.  and dont tell me you that its a  `private´ community, it obviously has a 10000. members.

Glocals is a verrrry useful platform in many senses i believe too, but why should glocals be that subjective?

i finish my 2 cents with googles words: dont be evil ! ...since people like to quote all the mark zuckerbergs and others... next time i will bring a quote of my grandmother, lol, she is the best!

you all have a good day.

i have a question: are CEO´s really supposed to do the Barman / Barwoman ? is that the plan? in meaning of giving out beers and drinks? or will they just "stand" behind the bar desk? and others will do the barman job?

how is someone supposed to talk seriously to a Barman more than 2 minutes, if he/she is busy with doing the barman / bar woman job?

before i obviously thought of the event more as: "meet CEOs -AT- the bar".

isnt the bar desk at first a physical obstacle? and if you at least manage to talk to each other, wont it be too hard understand due to noise level in an usual bar envorinment?

i see elementary difficulties in that event concept, but still a huge requirement, like shown in this forum thread only, for that kind of event is a very good reason to do it, if i´d the organizer of this i´d think over the concept again, this has to be well curated event otherwise it will be just a nice try but it wont bring anything to the guests... and you want to attract guest i assume.

what is the final goal for this event? i assume and hope it is the following: the make possible a REAL and authentic and communicative get to gether of guests and CEOs. obviously you dont  get the chance so often to cheer with TL Managers over a beer, wether you are 24 oder 44 i believe.

-

And Nir,

what i dont understand: why do you ask the people´s opinion in the forum if you already seem to know what you want to do and how you want to do it? the result is someone who wasnt your opinion, and expressed himself less dipomatic but quite crude, got deleted. if you read Pioneers quote with the right attention, you´d see some true facts, authentic doubts.

dont take it too personal, hopefully i dont get deleted too -lolll :D - , since we dont know each other in person, but i more and more have the impression that glocals is organized amatorial, obviously you and Oded literally impersonate Glocals so perfectly that its hard to believe this is an international platform for expats with open minds and global spirits, said that, glocals appearse to be just a PLAYGROUND, as quoted once in this thread, and very far from being Professional.

you´re probably surfing glocals on the very personal related level to the people you know from the members, thats also what you call `casual´in your glocas description, but come on! why should people you dont know personally in this forum, dont fit your idea of age, and you dont like his / her opinion, get deleted by you personally, from a so called open minded platform, provided by you to the `public´.  and dont tell me you that its a  `private´ community, it obviously has a 10000.

Cathy:

Thanks. I will check NoNolet ce soir and revert. But I agree on the criteria for selection:

- have outdoor terrace

- we can take over the entire place and ensure it's a private event

- fits ca 100 people

- not loud

Sev:

- The main objective of these events is to network among participants. The 2-3 more senior managers that will tend the bars will take part too, but getting to them is a bonus, not the main thing.

- I read the feedback here and consider it all. But at some point I need to move into decisions and action if we ever want to make this happen. So if most people seem to like the concept and the 30+ idea, then we're on. Some people won't like it, and that's also OK.

If we want out door and private event, we could check the President Wilson, "The Bayview"  by the pool can be a good spot, and if it rains (as we never know in Geneva) they will have enough space inside...

Many folks mentioned Nonolet as a potential venu for this event, so I checked it out last night. Here's what I saw:

1. The owners are very happy to host us there, and have heard a lot about glocals.com.

2. However, I don't think Nonolet is ideal for us, cos:

- We can't have the whole place to ourselves, just a certain area. Not ideal for the ambience and for ensuring an exclusive glocals event.

- No terrace. So if we fall on a hot evening, we're screwed.

- My personal feeling (many may disagree) is that the place is a bit "heavy". Maybe I'm dreaming, but I hope to find a venu where the ambience would be more relaxed, even if we're talking business networking.

So I think it's back to the search. Any more ideas welcome...

I would suggest the Enoteca Wine bar, its facing the Rhone-Lake exit, has a small terrace on the lake-Rhone river, and can be booked for groups. Its not to heavy, maybe too "laid back" for some ? but a bit small if we expect a crowd above 60 people inside. Located on back side of rue du Rhone 19.

Otherwise next door, on the Rhone river, there are a couple of good places too, larger by size.

Other option, The scandale, rue de Lausanne. any opinion ladies and gents ?

hi nir, hi ladies and gents,

here are a few suggestions, but they depend on the number of guests your wish to invite

* main lobbies of the 5* where you already held events: mandarin oriental, president wilson, intercontinental - they are fully equiped for such events, with all "back up" possibilities required (weather changes, etc). the intercontinental' pool can be a good possibility, like the president wilson'

* bar de l'île, a former market hall, big enough to host the whole event, and or private groups

quirinale is an excellent spot with a central "bar en îlot", good music, dinner area, but you end up in rue de la rotisserie..

hope this helps, catherine

Hi Nir

How about the bar/resto in the middle of the I'lle de Rousseau. They kind of close this off with tents when rented. Really cool in summer. Geneva city lights by night all round on a nice evening and under the cocktail tents if rain. They also organise DJ and all. Could be worth looking into. Taa

quirinale, is a great spot but the concept won't work, they already have their barmen and they will never close for an event.

i think we should stick to hotels to start with, and again I think the terrace of President would be great...

Tonight I'll speak with the prez Wilson & with the Ile Rosseau folks.

Both sounds good. I personally prefer Ile Rosseau cos it will give the event a less "heavy" feeling. I'm keen, and I might be dreaming here, to find a way to make business networking less formal and stuffy than it usually is.

Today I met the event folks at the Prez Wilson and the Interconti, and told them about the event we'll run. Both hotels liked the idea, and could potentially hold it at their pool-areas.

I'll have more details and costs from the hotels in the next few days, and will update you.

Am also meetiong the Ille Rousseau folks tomorrow.

Pool area?....... Does that mean we have to bring our swim outfits? I have been to many network & business evenings... but in a pool.... great idea Nir  Laughing

To get back on topic, I don't see the reason why the venue cannot be, as in Nir's words, "too heavy". After all it is about networking and business, right?

Most probably it will be on a weekday and 99.9% of the attending people will go there straight from work. I mean, I'm not going all the way home first to change suit to casual and then in causal going to a business event.... just sounds weird... I think.

Everybody going to such an event has done this before and I don't think that the "breaking ice by casual & comfy zone" is necessary for the people attending.

But.... that's just me... :)

I am (well) above 30, at the corresponding professional level and like to serve drinks. I agree that for this specific event, the age limit and the "CEO or similar" are important when it starts off - there are many ways to mingle with many people, but I think this initiative has its defined audience, which also makes it different and more easy for me to accept. Not just another business card / I sell you my services / do you have a job for me thing. So you can count me in, and in the bar please !.

Thanks,

Nir

OK, we got the pool at the President Wilson Hotel reserved exclusively for us for this event.

I just came back from a meeting there with their deputy director, who loved the concept. And their pool area is amazin.

We can have it all for us if:

- we hold the event on a Monday night

- we guarantee the hotel a minimum revenu from drinks. I suspect it will be around CHF 60 per person (tbc).

I think both conditions are OK. What think?

Thanks. Not sure about the package, we still didn't talk that. I think the hotel offers some "open bar and finger food" package at something like CHF 30 per hour per person. We might consider taking that package for every person for the first 2 hours. I'll know more about the while money side of things in the next few days, and will update you.

Cathy: thanks. I will surely keep pitching the concept to more venus, to see reactions and conditions.

Sev: The prez is expensive, no doubt. But the venu and image it carries and the experience of having a private night by the pool are simply amazing, and right on the direction of this event. So at least for the launch phase, it might be the right tradeoff. I'm also concious that while no one likes to pay more, the target audience for this specific event is more likely to decide if to come or not to come based on venu and experience, rather than based on drink prices.

Re: New glocals event line: CEOs behind the Bar
Post 104

Indeed Nir, I can't agree more.

Ofcourse the best option should be chosen (i.e. venue vs price) however I don't think other venues, in the same range of course, are much cheaper. President Wilson, Mandarin, Fourseasons.... all 5 star venues with about the same rates. But what do you get for that rate? They all have beer and wine and the food is great. If for the same money, or a couple of bugs more, we have a wonderful terrace I definately would choose that option.

The idea is still a business networking event. The question is: who signs of your expenses?  :)

What are the oppurtunities? Potential bussines, expanding your professional network and maybe even a sales pitch for yourself? It's all about costs vs potential benefits......

Personally I don't believe the costs are a big issue. Most important is to get a group with a big variety of professions. That is the key to a successful Business event.

I was yesterday at a fashion show in hotel President, and i really think it is beautiful and a great spot for exactly what we want to do.

I agree that it is not cheap, but i seriously don't think it is overpriced and it is worth it.

and if by chance it rains, they have space to put us inside...

hi nir, hi all

i agree as the price issue is not a real one, but we just need to get the appropriate package, and place for such events.

regarding the targeted audience: glocals needs a certain standing to carry the image and underlying purposes of our group: professionnals from international companies, from various culture, open minded people with innovative attitude to deal their daily life in geneva (social, business, etc.).

let's not forget the purpose of this first and expected meeting: business mingling&discussions in a relaxed atmosphere, behind and in front the bar. and due to the level of our barmen: we can't offer them a cheap place, question of respect, and credibility, for both.

* and the executives can talk about this event in their internal newletters if.. (especially if you invite HR or marketing people nir)

i personnally like the wilson's, which will provide us with the appropriate place to be hosted in the required conditions.

adressing our requirements to various 5* will help us get the best package, even at the wilson'. at least, we'll be sure their offer meets their price standard. this meeting will also give us the visibility for 5* stars hotels packages, for the upcoming events, similar to this one or not. so precious information in any case nir.

wish you all a great week-end. cd

Strongly support the idea Nir.

Perhaps in time we could also expand the concept to include the legal profession?

With regard to the age cap there are professionals in their twenties with phenomenal experience.  It may be prudent to keep in mind that most of us come from different academic structures.  So, (for example) an American with a business degree, a subsequent law degree, etc. will have studied at least 7 years or more --  resulting in overall less experience than a European who has practiced since their young twenties.  Just a thought ;)

I also completely agree with your comment re "venue/experience".  Definitely worth it.

Hi Nir

My humble opinion, is this to be an apero? or an evening to relax and let hair  and guard down chilling. I would say Monday night is fine for an apero but not an evening out, especially for 30+ ( maybe what I mean is also 40+) we kind of need more time to recup. Most people40+ would be heading home by 22.00 on a monday night, so not a good deal to chill. I personally would not mind paying more for a friday or sat night out without the stress of getting enough rest for work the next day. If you want it to be a success, make sat or fri evening a criteria in the negotiations I feel, so I would not go for the Wilson deal, cool pool or not. What did the I'ile de Rosseau folks say?

You could look around the carouge area, nice back yard terraces, I'll ask around. Fingers crossed, hope we find our ideal venue. What about the Yacht club, tour de carre. Quai de Cologny, rent the place and get a cool DJ.

Beautiful view and really cool in the evenings! What do you think?

Lyrnna,

Thanks. Indeed, if we go for a Monday night, it will probably be a 19h-22h kind of thing. Which is not bad a bad thing, in my view. It means that this won't turn into a wild night out with getting drunk and dancing, but anyway that's not the intent of this event.

I can keep looking for even more and more venues, but all that takes more time and energy. So I think we'll begin with the Prez, which is an amazing venue, especially given that we can have the entire pool area just for us.

Makes sense?

Amanda:

Thanks. When we launch this, folks from the legal profession will be very welcome to join.

I also hear you about the age gap in professions. We'll need to find a way to fine tune the criteria for being invited to these events, as we move forward with the concept.

A question about legal high fliers: if we wanted to invite a "Legal profession" CEO to be a barmen, who would you recommend inviting? I only heard of Charles Poncet, as a celebrity local lawyer. Would he be a good candidate, in your view?

Thanks,

nir

Hi Nir

Well if it is intended to be a 17 to 22 ish gig, then it sure makes sense. Also guests will not consume much drinks (alcohol) on week day nights, just a point.

But I till say you should look into the yacht club maybe the follow up event. Would be really cool if they agree. Taa

I'll be there at the Prez then, if thats whats agreed, for a little while then ;-D

Lyrnna I don't think you really got the concept of this event. It is not a get together, let's get drunk and party until the sunrise.

It is an networking event in a chilled place. So i don't think not consuming a lot would be a problem.

I think the yacht club is fun, but I belive we have to start somewhere, before everybody gets tired discussing about it and not doing it.

So if we have already a deal with the President, cool, let's start there and then we will see how it goes, and the do's and dont's for the next event.
