No heat in the building, emailed the regie twice

Hello

Curious what others have experienced with regards to turning the heat on for apt building...

In the past we've rented a house so it was up to us but have moved into a new apt building (renting). I would have thought that the building boiler would be turned on mid sept and we certainly wouldnt have to complain about something for which we obvioulsy pay for.

Ive sent two emails to the regie with no response. I see on other forums that general consensus is that the heat is turned on sometime in October and off the end of March! what a pile of rubbish if thats true. I think I'll take this up with Asloca, its really silly to pay for a dwelling and then have to wait for someone to turn the heat on. Strange customs....

Anyway look forward to hearing about how cold everyone else is and how you dealt with it other than putting sweaters and extra socks on.

The decision rests with the Régie but if you wish to complain I would suggest that you telephone and make a note of the date and the name of the person you speak to.  In my experience, emails are often ignored.

Meantime, if you’re feeling the cold, put on those sweaters and socks and also buy yourself a couple of portable electric heaters.  They can always come in useful.

Courage! R.

Actually you don't pay for the heating when it is not on. You might think you pay because this is included in your charges but the regie will send you a detailed account once a year with information of the heating and hot water used. The problem is that most often they take the whole building and divide the bill by the surface of your flat. If your neighbour likes to have 25o and to have hot tubs every evening you pay for them.

With a neighbour we asked for one degree more than the 20o we had in our flats. This resulted for me in an additional 300 francs to pay although it was the winter 2010-2011 which was exceptionally mild.

Sometimes it is better (at least moneywise) to wear a sweater and invest in a quality duvet.

Well, what you are actually paying it's the "expected expenditure" for the building during the year, and not the real value. the difference comes only once a year, normally end of the year. and believe me, i've seen some people with huge bills to pay for the extra heating they were having. So, in a sense, the regie is actually saving the tenants' money, because any extra heating (outside of what was expected), you'll all pay later on.

this said, you still can complain if it's too cold. http://www.hausinfo.ch/fr/home/droit/droit-bail/utilisation/chauffage.html

It's really not cold enough for heating yet - is it??

First thing i do when i go home from work is put on my shorts. I'm scottish right enough, I'll be wearing my shorts right through winter.

I can relate to g g, in Canada and the US we can gladly say that we have the ability to control our own heaters regardless of whether or not we're renting. It's disappointing that Switzerland is behind in this matter but I suppose we need to adjust.

At home we won't put the heating on until the end of October and off mid March.

Did you consider getting an oil filled raditor for the "inter" season. They cost about 30 euros on the French side of the border.
