Non-UHT Milk

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone knew where to get some non-UHT milk for a friend who is visiting next week.

I've never seen any around, but I'm sure there must be somewhere to buy it!

Thanks

The only UHT-milk, I have seen is the milk placed on the shelves without refrigeration. The other milk in the cooler is pasteurized or flash-pasteurized (both non-UHT).  If you meant unheated milk, then go to Carrefour in France and look for a clear plastic bottle with a cow on it.. "Margerita". That milk is microfiltered and not heated.. It's way, way, way* better than UHT and even flash-pasteurized milk.

FL

*I can say it some more..

What's wrong with pasteurized milk?

You mean non UHT-milk or unpasteurized milk? For the first one, you find them at any Migros, Coop etc, in the fridge shelf. For the second, you'll need to buy it on a farm...

Eva> The "Margarita"-milk is not pasteurized, but microfiltered, i.e. not heated at all. Of course, you can go to a farm to get it au naturel ;) Haven't seen any farms nearby, though.

Catalin> Nothing. It's a matter of preference. In my opinion, UHT (ultrahigh temperature treatment) especially, but also pasteurized milk loses some flavour, whereas microfiltered milk doesn't. It tastes more fresh. It's like night and day. I can only suggest to try it.

I grew up at the country side. I had only fresh milk not processed in any way until the end of high scool ;) I was just wondering what people have against pasteurized milk. Fresh milk doesn't last more than 2-3 days though while pasteurized you can keep it in the fridge for a week after you opened it.

Nothing wrong with pasteurized, it's just different in taste. You could also make the argument that filtering is more gentle to the milk than heating, however short, but that might be a digression.

The filtered milk lasts as long here, as the pasteurized milk (5-6 days, but I also keep the fridge at 2C* instead of 5C).

I do keep a small stash of UHT for when I run of out the good stuff ;) (I need it for coffee).

*Global warming be damned.

Also a digression but there is no hardcore evidence that there is a global warming. In fact, over the last decade tha temperature has dropped.

Haven't you heard of the Climate Research Unit hacking?

You might want to research your comments a little more - climate change refers to overall trends in warmer temperatures and higher variability in weather patterns - this is not something we can determine by how cold it is this winter alone :) The term global warming can be misleading, as it clearly does not refer to temperatures rising steadily, but the overall trends in warmer global temperatures, which are happening. The past decade has seen the warmest years globally on record.

If you have doubts, just be sure to check who is funding the research you reference - it can be very telling! Good luck.

I heard of it - how could I not :) -, and read about it in some detail (me coming from a scientific field), and I agree that the emails.. are.. let's say.. serious-looking, to be polite.

However, a decade is just a blip on the geological timescale, so a decade of decline, if real, is in itself not proof, although worth discussing. It's the big picture, that's important - and I think the ice cap CO2 readings are reliable (shows marked increase). What they mean.. is another digression. There are also the decade-long pan evaporation measurements, indicating something strange (global dimming+global warming combined).

There's also the possible tie-in with sunspots/solar cycle 24, which I might further overextend myself commenting upon (perhaps a WMO-glocaler can?).

Look at the before/after pictures of retreating glaciers. I, for one, intend to book a flight to Greenland, while I can ;)

"The past decade has seen the warmest years globally on record."

Key word is "on record", and our "records" don't stretch too far. If you agree that everything goes in cycles you can have say a warming over a decade or even a century, but that can actually fit inside a bigger cycle of 1000 or 10 000 years leading to colder weather.

It's currently impossible to simulate accurately something so complex as global weather since there are so many variables and small variations in millions of variables compounded can lead to very different end results. Commons sense tells me that nobody can currently tell for sure where the climate is going whatever the "readings" tell. And don't get me started on the software  they are using to analyze the "readings".
