Nyon Station - Hang out for drunks

Passed the front entrance of Nyon station recently?  Seems to me like everyday the crowd of drunks and buskers is growing.

Counted 14 unwashed people tonight drinking and pissing in the plants nearby, the other day one was washing it's feet in the drinking water fountain.

Used to be a nice place too, maybe I'm getting old :)   Glad I just pass through and live a few lm away.

Yes,I'm afraid British culture is slowly spreading even into saintly Switzerland.Lausanne station is the same.

Young people never used to drink like they do now, plus more shops sell alcohol, plus young people don't have the nice, secure future here that they used to,and maybe they adopt an " I don't care" attitude,I don't know.

But,you know,Switzerland has always had a very big alcohol problem that was politely kept out of sight for a long time.I was shocked to learn this when I landed here more than 20 years ago.Maybe Switzerland is simply showing it's underwear now.

Oh right! You were attempting to be funny. You should notify us in future that you're trying to be clever. That way we'll have a fighting to recognise what you're going on about. So what you meant was 'I'm afraid Essex culture..."

The main thing is you're not coming out with sweeping generalisations that everyone in Essex is an uneducated f--kwit who pisses all over the street.

I would endorse the comment that CH has had an alcohol problem for a very long time, well over a century in fact.  It was simply swept under the carpet behind a closed door although the parents and children living with a heavy drinker knew it was there.  The long dark nights in the mountain villages didn’t help either and many young people escaped to the towns and cities in search of some sort of work, often unskilled, and then, because of the lack of other entertainment, they congregate in the local caff for company and warmth and perpetuated the problem.

Still, it’s only in the past 20 years or so that we’ve seen such defiant display of disrespect in public.  I don’t know whether the trend originated in the UK but it seems to have spread like wild fire all over western Europe.

There's a time and a place.. In my opinion outside the station in the afternoon is neither the time nor the place and pissing in the plants and washing feet în the drinking water is less than good behaviour, by any civilised standards.

Counting the people isn't really a pass time of mine but since i was standing nearby waiting for the bus, it passed a few seconds.

If you think this sounds like fun then maybe go join them or plan an activity there?

Aug 29, 13 21:58

because in many British towns and cities its common to see extremely drunk people in the centre in the evening doing this sort of thing. So I can see how people might have this impression, because its quite a visible thing.

As you say though in your other post though it is actually unfair to say this is what British people do (I hardly know any people who drink like this in the UK, which suggests its just a visible minority doing it in public, though there is another minority who also do it in private - but most people I know don't drink or behave like this!)

John, I can't agree more with you - it's not normal, but having said that, going on that Switzerland has a problem - it's a British thing - or French - or Dutch - or Polish give me break - it's a problem since alcohol - or any other substance - has been around and there will always be problems assiociated with them, there always will be a group of people  who can't control themselves. It's not new, it has nothing to do with Switzerland or the UK, and there will always be a group who will be drunk, broke, peeing in the fontain, or washing their feet.

I think there is the monthly drinks at the Cactus anyway - which can be considered the trainstation right :-) would be happy to shake hands (washed please) and share a couple of pints ;-)

Yeah.. don't come to Nyon. It's dangerous, filled with violent Colombian drug war lords and Nigerian criminals - combined with Liberian war criminals it's a dangerous place. Let alone for lady traveling (alone) by train.

No I wouldn't even come close to Nyon - let alone let my children grow up there....

/sarcasm mode off

Take the train, go down to the lake and enjoy a breath of fresh air compared to calvinistic Geneva!!!!! Nyon is brilliant for it's size! Clean, safe and what Geneve used to be 10 years ago!

It's not rude what you said, but just don't take it too seriously what's being said on internet fora. Just go and see with your own eyes! Nyon is lovely place - and these drunks... yeah - they are everywhere on this planet! Can't get around that!

Enjoy it - O's terrasse sur lac is lovely, Nyon Plage is great - the fish, Mumbai bar,Cafe des Artes and so on and so on. Ignore the silly posts!

Where there's a "Denner", there's a way and there are 2 "Denner" right by Nyon station.

Whenever I go there after work (to buy my vino - with no intention of pissing in the bushes, I would like to add!), they're all buying up the 80cent lager cans before hoofing it over the road to sit on the grass and get sloshed.

It's summer - come the cold weather and they'll all be indoors, getting drunk and pissing on their house plants and the problem will be "solved".  Cool

P.S. Buzzy - as you've been living here for 20 years, when was the last time YOU visited Romford on a Saturday night?!?!?!

Agree with what Martin says -- Nyon is nice, go, don't be put off!!

I just don't like these people hanging about pissing and throwing empty cans on what is a very nice looking well maintained place.. These ladies and gentlemen are not intimidating and don't appear to bother anybody.

The nigerians seem to have disappeared by the way Martin.. Where did they go :)

Ritchie - my sincere apologies if I in one way or the other perhaps said things on the wrong way. You have a point - wether its with tpg or alcohol. But current society tends to over analyze or - over criticize certain actions. Things are not so much different as they where - say - 40 years ago. They are just more exposed.  But I do believe that has more to do with the current ease of acces to information. 49 years ago we'd only know what happened in the next village. Now we get live feeds from Iran. We just expose more. But that doesn't mean you where wrong - or right. I believe the problem just gets exposed more. And so we want to do something about it - a d that's where it gets tricky.

One of the problems- as in the UK- is the sale of very cheap alcohol( the new opium of the masses?)Keeps people from doing anything constructive to tackle the injustices in their lives.Just like the government gives a basic income to the unemployed who are over their chomage allowance......they have enough money to buy basic sedatives: ciggies, beer and weed. That keeps them quiet and stops them stealing to get their basic needs.A very practical approach by the Swiss authorities: let them rot in their own cesspit. At least they won't cause any REAL trouble.

I guess every country has its drunks and homeless. In Appenzell (Innerrhoden and Ausserrhoden) as well as BE (the whole canton), its a well known fact that most restaurants cant survive without their regular alcoholics. Each and every restaurant has its alcoholics. But this is an open secret, there was even a Federal Council who was an alcoholic, but I wont mention his name, but he is not in office any more, and is not alive neither. He was not in office when he died.

Sorry,it isn't only Romford- add Chelmsford,Dover,Colchester ,Basically any country town that has a pedestrianised centre,I wasn't trying to be clever. This is a nationwide problem.

it then of course gets exported(Ibiza, magaluf, shall I go on?)

it is a cultural problem.....and it is spreading.
