ORANGE - be careful! do not sign a contract with them!
Dear All,

I would like to share my negative experience that i had after i signed a Internet Everywhere Student contract for internet with ORANGE. When i asked what is the best internet deal with Orange they suggested this deal, which stated "surf without limits" you pay 40 CHF a month, but there is a small footnote which says "up to 2.5 GB download/month corresponding to thousands of web pages and emails, additional MB at CHF 0.50". Even if the customer reads this small footnote, he/she would come to the conclusion that the term download only refers to the download of documents as this is the way the term “download” is commonly used. It is not clearly stated that the term “download” in fact refers to any transfer of data from the internet. Even if you use skype, msn and open any page it is all considered to be a download. To which end i received a bill of 1.500 CHF after 3 weeks. :w00t:

Carefully  read terms and conditions of any contract, as it is written if you want to terminate a contract with Orange, you would have to pay 500 termination fee. Moreover, if they choose to decide to terminate a contract with you prematurely, YOU still would have to pay them 500 CHF termination fee. Which i personally find unfair and not customer friendly.

Hum, nothing to do with Orange. Download is any data you download on your device, and to visit a website, you need to download the page, that's it. When you read this forum, you're downloading datas...

But It's true Orange behave like that.

Someone I know wanted to cancel the abonnement with them after some eight years because she had been given a business number, so she didn't needed it anymore.

They refused to cancel claiming that she didn't warn them two months (or similar) before the expiration date of the previous contract and so they had automatically renewed it for the following year. The previous years they had always contacted her offering a new mobile phone to reward her if she renewed the contract for another year.

She than claimed from them the new complimentary mobile phone that they offered her each year for renewing her contract and than switched off that number forever and sent the request for cancellation. Confirmation arrived nearly a year later (during which she had to pay the monthly fee).

Not the best behaviour to grant she'll get back to them if she needs a new number.

my point, Grasdubide, is that you shouldn't need to be a lawyer to be able to sign such a simple service contract as a mobile phone one.

Orange should have helped Oyuna to understand all implications, rather than adding microscopic lines to the contract. That's how you make customers happy and willing to come back to you.

Stef, for sure I agree, but, correct me if I'm wrong, she was talking about Internet subcription, not a mobile phone subscription. The bad behaviour from Orange here is to put a download limit on Internet connection.

On a mobile, with 2.5 Go, you can stay connected 24x7 without any overquota... ;)

guys, it is amazing how they mislead you! this is what is written on their website:

Vision & mission

Our corporate vision is that wirefree services will become the preferred personal communications tool for all communication needs. Our mission is to become the leading provider of high quality wirefree communications services to the people of Switzerland.

Value proposition

Transparent service this is simple, reliable and innovative with no hidden charges, offering excellent value for money, with strong brand identity, best customer care, underpinned by excellent coverage and supported by first class distribution.

Fair

Orange believes that you should not have to pay for time that you don’t use. The more you talk, the better value you should get. Orange is committed to keeping your costs low, so that everyone can afford to make and receive calls at any time.

Simple

Orange believes that wirefree communications should be easy to choose. That’s why Orange Price Plans give you one single price for standard calls no matter when you use your phone. Also, technological features are useless unless they are easy to use. That’s why Orange focuses on innovation in the design of services which are easy to use.

Straightforward

Nothing should be hidden. :w00t: That’s why with Orange you get a fully itemised bill that tells you exactly what you are paying for.;)

what is happening in reality is amazingly shocking! just today i called to orange asking to respond to my complaint letter that i sent 2 months ago. After being on the phone over 1 hour and explaining my case to two different people, they still didnt provide any asnwer to my complaint and told me that they will come back to me next week? :hehe:

I had to take half a day from work to spend 3 hours in the orange store in order to find out what is happening and why it happened the way it happened! GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE???? i dont think so!

Btw, as said Stef, do not hesitate to complain, we had the same problem with Swisscom at my office. Especially in Switzerland, they will prefer to have happy customers than unpaid invoices...

Well, that's what happens when you choose a contract with per MByte pricing.

So you roughly used 3 GB of bandwidth...

The problem is: how to contact the customer in such a case?

- letters get thrown away or go unread for weeks (customer may be on holiday)

- phoning is problematic: customer may have lost phone, new "owner" is using it to rack-up charges

- in the end, cutting off the connection is the most sensible thing to do, because it requires action from the customer and usually the customer reacts fast when the mobile is a brick...

I have Orange, but my phone can hardly rack-up much internet-charges (it's a pain to use it as a browser) - can you have an email sent to you when you pass a certain datatransfer limit?

That would be useful....

I'm not sure if it's Orange fault that they didn't try to explain to you how much a Megabyte actually is (and that a Gigabyte will cost you 50000 Rappen...).

The salesman probably only gets commission for selling phones+contracts and not for talking customers away from contracts that are very profitable for his employer.

People should just stop assuming that shop-employees are going to "help" them somehow. They eat, they drink, they have flats. They have bills. Somebody has got to pay for that. That somebody is most likely you. Or me. Or someone else.

Happens everyday.

Try to get a deal with Orange so that you don't need to pay all of the 1500, or that you can pay in rates (without interest of course).

Please be as polite as possible - Swiss people don't really like angry foreigners (they don't like angry Swiss people either, but those get the Swiss-passport-and-dialect-bonus that we don't get...).

You can try to argue that you were not aware of the costs that can possibly arise (my calculations above...).

I'd maybe try to talk to the manager of the store directly - a normal employee has little wiggle-room in such cases, and they are certainly not going to go out of their way to admit a mistake that a co-worker made (unless he's an asshole and they want to get rid of him anyway...).

Try to get to know relatively early if the person in front of you can actually make a decision on your case or is just, well, a puppet. It should maybe not be the first question, though...

You can play silly, but be very careful not to exaggerate. Especially if the other person is a woman ;-)

I'm sounding far more reasonable when I would be in reality, probably, but maybe it helps you some.

Rainer

PS: now that I'm thinking about it, as you are a foreigner, you'll most likely end-up paying the 1500 in a one-time payment (and pretty soon, if you want your connection back) - they will just claim that you could leave the country anytime without paying...

PSPS: prepare to take more days off or alternatively, prepare for a long and fruitless exchange of letters...

Many thanks Rainer for kind advises, i really appreciate it!

Just to clarify, the only reason i posted this information is to warn others about such negative situation that might arise should they consider signing the contract with Orange. In general, it is important to know that once you sign a contract, you cannot get out of it unless you pay 500 CHF. especially, when you are not happy with customer services, there is no way to terminate a contract unless you have to pay such a high price. This is something that i find unfair and would strongly advocate to be careful about.

In general, i am amazed how the advertisement of Orange differs from the reality of negative customer service! they claim that

Orange is committed to keeping your costs low, so that everyone can afford to make and receive calls at any time.

at the end of the day, i agree it is all individuals that you are dealing with. However, i see it misleading when you claim that you provide a fair service and in reality it is the oppposite story.

voila!

I don't work for an internet company but I have always read the details of the offer.

I'm not aware of how you ordered but on their website they do state if the chosen adsl contract has a download limit:

http://www.tele2.ch/en/internet/adsl-offers.html

The one above doesn't, but I couldn't find another one on the website so quick.

Most salespeople will ask you about your internet behaviour (download..) and in your case

would never have advised you the contract that you have.

2,5 GB a month is quite a lot and can never be reached by "normal" use. Websites like youtube on the other hand will help a lot reaching that. Radio for example is 3,3 MB a minute or more depending on the quality. 3,3 x 1000 min/ 17 hours= 3,3 GB

Based on average radio station broadcasting at 56kb/sec.

Contracts that need to be ended 2 months before is nothing new, not for internet and it ain't for a lot of other stuff. You maybe want something quick, but you don't realise what you're committing yourself too.

Oyuna,

Thanks for posting this.

I know that Orange is soon coming out with an Internet-Everywhere unlimited surfing plan, at a fixed price. So it would solve the issue, atleast for the future...:)

Nir

PS - lesson from all this: we need to read the fine print...;)

Hi all Glocals,

I'm from Geneva and lived here all my life. I started using GSM mobile phones as early as 1992 and have regularly compared the evolution of the different providers' price plans, who then also started becoming Internet Service Provides (ISP).

The mobile phone players worth doing business with in Geneva are/were:

Swisscom

Diax/Sunrise

Orange

Tele2 (now bought by Sunrise)

and for Internet add Cablecom. I am an avid computer user and it is also my job.

What I learned from many years of telephone company tourism is to stay away from Orange. Simply put, they suck. It is not the same as Orange in other countries.

So that said, don't use them for internet either.

For ADSL internet access today, if you are already a customer of one of Swisscom or Sunrise, check their offers (read the fine print) and get the bundle if it fits your needs.

If not, you can also go for Cable internet with Cablecom. Sometimes they have a better bandwidth deal for the same price.

That was just my 2 cents opinion...

email me if you want more offer analysis...

YOU ARE COMPLETLY RIGHT...

Unfortunatly, switzerland is (I bet) the when it comes to consumer rights. The fact that they don't belong to EU is the reason. I've never seen this befor in other countries. It ridiculous. I come from Portugal, and I can say we are light years ahed of them...consumer rights, cosumer services, payment modes etc....very, very sad.

I will always remeber the day I tried to buy a phone, and this was denied based on some information by the police...at that time, I was in Switzerland for 3 monts, just starting my PhD...I found the way they went through my personal information completly fascist...

I'm sorry to say this, but I really hate living in switzerland...leaving soon anyway. :)

So that said, don't use them for internet either.

Patrick, many thanks for this information! I would like to do a little research regarding different experience people had with ORANGE in order to prepare a small article for a news paper! Guys i would appreciate if you can share or you dont mind to share the negative/positive experience you had with ORANGE company in order to prepare the most objective picture of its services in switzerland.

Oyuna, I can only agree with Patrick and the others. Stay away from Orange and read the fine print of the other operators.

I have to admit: I only had good experiences with Orange.

I switched my mobile from Swisscom to Orange 2 years ago, and the things I like are these:

  • Great service. What I especially love is that when I'm late with my payments (almost every month, sadly!) they actually call me - in English - and remind me kindly that if I don't pay then my phone will get disconnected. With Swisscom it was a letter (which I didn't read), and then drastic action. Far friendlier with Orange.
  • The price. I calculated that I save 20% vs Swisscom each month. Not bad!
