Permit B - Working Opportunity for Non-EU citizens

Hello everyone,

I got a quick question on Permit B, and its impact on working opportunities.

I know as a Non-EU passport holder (I am a Chinese), I am not allowed to work in the first 6 months.

My LL.M course starts from 1 September, and I am hoping that I will get a Swiss visa from 15 July 2013.  Does that mean, if I arrive in Geneva on 15th July, and get my Permit B on 16th July 2013, I can start working on 16 January 2014?

I am hoping to look for working opportunities when approaching my 6 months mark.

Thanks in advance for your time.

I agree with Careena.  I'd also add that it might be useful to start your search for a part-time job a few months in advance of the sixth month mark.  Keep in mind in Geneva, you are only allowed to work 15 hours per week while enrolled during the school year.  Full-time during the summer.

Thanks very much for your advice Careena!

Without a Permit B, does that mean I cannot travel to other parts of the Europe?

PS: your baby is so cute!

I think if you are a student you can still travel, but best check with the office population that will give you your permit. I will check more this wek and hope i can clarify. But i think carena is correct about the time for getting a permit, its not immediate

Even though getting your actual permit can take quite a while, as long as you keep a copy of the application, that should be acceptable to most potential employers - I even kept mine for travelling, although since border security never stopped me, I can't tell you how well it would have worked!
