Pickwick Pub - staff problems?

Since Clubhouse was closed this afternoon (why? no clear opening hours, no sign saying "we're on holiday") I ended up in Pickwick for a burger.

While I was eating I witnessed a fight between two staff members (a chef and a waitress). No blood was drawn but it was loud. The manager was standing right next to it saying that it was between the two staff members and he had nothing to do with it, while a few guests including myself were following the spectacle with interest.

I don't come there often, but from what I remember the staff were always native English speakers, always fun to chat with. Now there were 3 Russian girls walking around, providing the trademark Russian service-without-a-smile, seemingly unable to speak French and misunderstanding my English. Sure they were cute, and that's high on my list of priorities, but it shouldn't be the only criteria.

The chef was the one shouting loudest, telling one of the girls 'never to set foot in the kitchen again', complaining that the kitchen was understaffed, and threatening to quit. The manager seemed to be on his hand, though probably out of fear of losing his only chef.

Has there been some recent staff turnover? New management perhaps? The burger was fine but the atmosphere and service were clearly different from what I remember.

Russian waitresses you say.......cute you say???........ ah haaa.... as long as the beer was cold, and the eyecandy respectable, and you dont have the shits from the food, and the floorshow was entertaining... sounds like a good lunch... could have been worse.

(Clubhouse should have been open...according to its website... only on mondays it opens at 5pm, the rest its midday till close.)

In February I noticed two russian bartenders, yes, they looked not so friendly and discussed clients between each other...

"trademark Russian service-without-a-smile" - you think it's only happening in Russia? For me honestly, this note does look rude

Unfortunately I experience the "russian service-without-a-smile" trademark everytime I go to eastern countries (except Hungary). In Bratislava I had so many traumatising experiences that now I am frankly afraid to approach a cashier or a seller. Goa (in India) is invaded by Russians, and the local people had to demonstrate, for the first time in their live, against their very agressive and thretening behaviour. Now, we are invaded too .....

Hi Yana,

I'm sorry if my post offended you, that was not my intention. There are many things I love about Russia and Russians; for one I am married to a gorgeous Russian woman.

However, based on my experience, including living in Russia (Moscow) for about 5 years, Russian service employees (waiters/waitresses, shop attendants, etc.) rarely smile when they serve you. In contrast, in many Western European countries it is common for a service provider and a customer to smile to each other.I hope that you understand what I am talking about, and that I didn't write this down to offend anyone.

But frankly what bothered me in this case is that the girls seemed to be completely uninterested in me; they barely noticed that I was at the table, were just chatting amongst themselves (about other customers - I speak Russian well enough to understand).

You didn`t offend me particullary. You speak of the things that cause talk about "The Great Invasion Of Russians To Geneva "(it is a bit funny , but still...). By just 1 single frase you have changed the topic of your post . And you know about which one exactly am i talking.

I am very happy for you and your wife and i think she will explain to you , that Netherlands or Switzerland dont share the same culture or traditions  with Russia. And she also might explain to you why i think that this is more than innapropriate.

As i already said - "2 waitresses in a bar"  doesn`t seem to be a good enough topic to be talking about. If i was your wife i would be interessted why you are still thinking about them )

Or maybe it was your big but tender ego wounded . Mine would be if 2 girls didn`t give a crap about me.

Oh , almost forgot , apology accepted ))

@edward i've been going to PW for 2-3 years and I can't remember a time when they *didn't* have a russian-speaking waitress. I have never had anything but smiles from the bar staff, even at the end of an 8-hour shift or whatever.

The food is varied. The managers can be a bit odd, but cold beer and fun people makes it a reasonable place to be.

Now, pub staff arguing at each other?!? clearly the exception, not the rule, but the manager who said it had nothing to do with the pub has no concept. Those two are the faces that people associate with the pub and so arguing *must* be prohibited, especially in public.

Doesn't matter of the race or nationality but it is annoying when people don't do their job right and there are so many bad cases in hospitality.

In this case a  manager should be fired because he needs to take care of his emloyees and that everything works just perfect and he should be an example how you need to do your job.

Most important thing, manager (a term that is so easily used as a title) should tell his employees what is important in specific job, what needs to be done and in a case if it's not done there are certain consenquences.

I mean if I work hard and go our for a drink or a meal I expect my spoon or a glass to be clean because I'm paying for it. I understand nothing is perfect and people make mistakes but hey, if you're not doing your job well and you're just too bothered, then there are other people willing to work and do a better job.

As for annoying, faceless and smileless employees I've seen in various countries, from UK, Austria, France, Switzerland, Holland, Slovenia and even in my home-country Croatia. Ignorant people are everywhere but I put my focus on smiley faces.

And again, bad service comes from a bad manager.

There is a Russian saying that there is no such thing as an ugly women only bad (or not enough) vodka.  I am sure that this could be equally applied to non smiling bar staff and beer.

Your only valid reason for complaint is if these unsmiling females ignored you when you asked for beer thus preventing you from drinking them into smiling beauties.

Sorry no cyrillic script on my keyboard

'nyet khoroshykh zhenschin, tol'ko nedostatok vodki'

Hahahaha brilliant, although a sweeping generalisation, i generally agree!

Service with a smile wouldnt hurt, lets not keep it specificly to piwi's. Geneva tends to lack service with a smile and infact good service... Halle de ille topping the bill!

agreed. customer service seems to be about as tangible and real a concept in geneva as flying pigs wearing raybans..  halle de l'ille does rank in the top 5 for sure, i've waited 40 mins for a drink there before and when i expressed the fact i was irritated at being ignored for almost an hour i'm told that I am the one who is rude.

they often seem to forget which party is the customer here, and often you feel like you're the one who's done something wrong!

stop focussing on the Russian waitresses, and focus on "why" clubhouse was closed... thats more of a disaster in my book.

Bars with crap service number many in Geneva, ditto stores, and restaurants and cafes... seeing as these places are the pinnacle of the client "service" pyramid, where in a normal city it is imperative to maintain high standards in order to retain clients...I am suprised so many remain open.... however we are a captive audience here, and despite knowing its going to take me 20 to 40 mins to buy a drink at halles des Iles, i still go there,,,and so do hundreds of other people... shame on me were it any other city...shame on them for not trying harder...

I would have said the Sovietic service without a smile (sorry for the pleonasm). I talk by travel experience in Russia about those women who gives you for free a very bad look and do not smile like Goulag guardian, because they were so influenced by the f*** communism, that makes a big border between the group of russian influenced by the bad soviet culture (be rude, be competitive, blablabla) and the one like my family who left Russia before revolution, that were educate in another way. (They wanted to kill us but f*** to them we are alive)

I'm not affraid to have these words, because when that kind of things happen, people reported me because i have russian name, and i'm tired to hear this

Not all russian women are like them. Many are nices, smiling and educated and work hard, I also saw that in Russia, but yes it is not the majority.

Another thing that I defenetely hate about Soviet influences : the women who knock at the door when you are in toilets to hurry up despite you are in from a few seconds (and not a few minutes and a few hours) ; Worse than rude, stupid.

My initial reason for this thread was that I saw a fight at Pickwick and that the service wasn't as friendly as I remembered. Funny to see it develop into a thread about service in Geneva in general (and topless waitresses, thanks to Charlie).

Keep it going, but let me rephrase my original question: What has happened to the friendly native-English-speaking staff at Pickwick? Are they gone, or only there in the evenings?

Another thing still unresolved: why was Clubhouse closed?>

the friendly staff were beaten up in the previous bouts the weeks before during which the weekly 'UFC- bar staff' matches took place. The final will take place in 2 weeks time once the staff has beaten itself down to only 2 remaining employees/competitors and will be shown on pay-per-view on all major sports networks. Don King is rumoured to be promoting this final match.

as for clubhouse- they had to close as pickwicks' normal bookies were out wakeboarding in the sunshine, and so clubhouse's staff were called in to take all the punter's bets.

or so i've heard anyway..
