It's quite simple assuming you have the hose and the outlets nearby. I'd save the money and DIY unless you want the piece of mind of a professional doing it. Can't imagine anything of that sort being cheap here.

Jessica, if the machine will be delivered to you and you can check that the hoses correspond to the taps, so that you will not need to make any adaptations, the person who delivers it may be able to help you install it, or you may find it easy enough to do it yourself.

If you find there are any complications, and you will need professional help, send me a message and I will send you the information for a plumber who lives in my building (in France). I will ask him if he does work in Geneva (since he is not a free-lancer, but he has a registered "company", he may not be able to). He charged me a very reasonable fee for a repair once.

If you live in an apartment in Geneva what want a fixed installation, better ask your concierge. My concierge replaced my bidet with the laundry machine for only 100chf.

You are right, the regie said they will send a plumber at my own cost, but I am not sure how much it will cost, i am waiting for a contract.

I cannot imagine your case that you were offered including a machine even...lucky you!

Hi,

Thanks a lot for your information. I move to a new appartment where there was no laundry machine installed, so I need someone to come and check how and where it is possible to install it, in fact i do not know what needs to be done neither.

Yes please help me to give me more details, if possible. Many thanks!

if you have space in the bathroom then it is quite easy.

you can buy the fittings at the DIY store and run the water hose from the tap in the bathroom to the washing machine and the drain hose from the machine into the sink. ( no fittings needed )

i have done this many times, it's very straightforward.

Hi Jessica,

As others have mentioned, it is really easy to install a washing machine even if there was never one in the apartment. But I realize that if you have never had the experience or seen one installed it may seem daunting and you may prefer to have someone do it for you. Just the same, it would be good to understand what is involved so that you don't end up being overchargerd.

Basically, the machine needs a source of water and a place for the dirty water to drain out into. Check if your machine needs a hot and a cold water input, or just cold (new machines heat the water themselves).

1. Even if there is no machine installed right now, find out if there has even been one installed in the past and where. Look for places like the kitchen or bathroom, where there are incoming water pipes and drainage pipes. See if there is a T-junction in the incoming pipes that have been plugged when the machine was removed. Ask someone to help you look even if it is not a plumber.  If there has been one there before, installation will be extremely easy. Just plug the machine's intake water hose and place the drain hose from the machine into the drainage pipe.

2. Even if there has never been one in the apartment, installing one is easy. Best location is next or close to a kitchen sink, or in a bathroom. You don't even have to cut existing pipes to insert a T-junction. You can get junctions which will pierce existing water pipes when you tighten them. For the drain pipe, you can install a junction on the drain pipe from your kitchen or bathroom sink. If there is no space next to the sinks, you will just need longer hoses. That is it.

Take 5 minutes to watch the video in this website so you can see how simple it is:

http://www.homebase.co.uk/en/static/how-to-install-a-dishwasher-or-washing-machine

I think you will find it helpful to understand how it is done even if you hire someone to do it for you, as it will make you feel comfortable negotiating a fair fee.

All that should be needed are two or three T-junctions, and they should be fairly cheap. Someone who knows what to do should be able to do it in less than an hour, and it is really not hard work, so the fees should not be that high.

Jessica, I bought the machine myself and spoke to my concierge who willingly offered his service.

I also tried the DIY way but the problem here is the noise it generates when the machine started the rinsing, so I opted to have it fixed.

One more thing... be nice to your concierge, he/she can assist you on a cheaper service compare to what the regie recommends.

Hi Jessica,

What you also have to consider in a rental flat is liability. If you have someone come to install a washing machine and they aren't certified, if anything goes wrong that causes damage, your insurance won't cover your liability. I would invest in having a certified plumber come (even better the one recommended by the regie - in which case they'll have no reason to complain if something goes wrong) as a few hundred is certainly better than the riskes of thousands later. Having said that, all of the places where I've lived have had connections already and I've screwed on the machine connection myself.

If the plumber has to create a connection, depending on where it is, you could be looking at 200-500chf for an installation. You could send pics (underneath the sink, your kitchen, bathroom, underneath bathroom sink) to a plumber (or even post on Glocals) to get advice on where and how you could install a machine and some companies might be able to give you a rough estimate already.

Generally, a washing machine will either go in the bathroom (need an electricity supply) or under the counter in the kitchen - most equipped kitchens are designed so you can remove sections, install a dishwasher and/or washing machine and then re-install the cabinet when you move out (if necessary), provided you have a place to store the cabinet. Of course, if your kitchen isn't furnished, you can put a machine wherever there is room within a reasonable distance from the sink.

Good luck!

I have not been able to talk to my neighbor in person, so I don't know if he can work in Geneva. You may want to contact him directly.

Here is the contact information:

Tél. : (33) 4 50 42 76 21
Port. : 06 03 78 36 11
E-mail :[email protected]

He fixed a serious problem for me (flooding, which he was able to locate the source of and fix), for 60 euros. It took him two hours of work and having to get some small parts.
