Post-internship frustration. Shall I change my career path at this point?

Dear all,

Some time has passed since my last post on the forum, and yet my frustration has not disappeared.

After my last  F. internship (and no, F doesnt stay for funny) I decided to take some time, apply only for PAID positions and finally start a French language course. The result is: happy unemployment, how surprising.

Recently I thought maybe I should get another MA degree in something slightly different from what I have been studying so far (Conflict Resolution, ME, Arabic Studies), and I thought Human Resources could be an interesting subject to consider, but then the only course I found in Geneva is at Webster University for 14.000 CH a year and no scholarships. Shall I pay the money to get a 3rd degree when it is likely I am gonna be unemployed anyway when I am done?

I wouldn't recommend a 3rd degree, especially at that price, because I don't see it as helping you get a job in this field in particular. You might enter HR in a private company, but then... depends if you want to work in IR or HR?

Webster is definately more than 14,000 per year.  This is the cost of undergraduate for one semester ( 4 months)

12 classes for the M.A. in HR at 3,000 chf per class.  It will take you 6 terms (roughly 13 months) unless you do 2 terms with 2 classes per each. The M.A in HR is about 38,000 chf... if it makes you feel any better, the books are included in tuition

I have my M.A. from Webster in IR and also an MBA.  I am from St. Louis where Webster is from originally, it is definately worth the price if you have any desire to live or work in the U.S.  If you are only looking in Europe, it is very expensive and if tuition is a concern (for most Webster students, finances are not...) I would definately tell you to think twice about it.

Hi Roberta. Why not to consider HEC (a bachelor in Business management) at the Geneva University, if you want to be sure to find a job? I graduated in business management, and companies like that kind of diploma, to find a job (not interesting one, but it's a paid job) was quite easy with that kind of study :)

Hi Juan, what were the costs for the complete degree? And average time to complete, fulltime/parttime/online?

Hi FeneyL,

When I did it some years ago, it was almost for free, meaning only the "taxes universitaires", which amount today to CHF 500.- per semester. A small bachelor should be completed in about 3 years, I suppose. At that time, I did the Licence (done in about 4 years), which is the today's equivalent of a Master's degree. These studies are really a piece of cake, with many job opportunities. Bachelor's studies at the Université de Genève are in French language only. You can find more information at the following site : http://www.unige.ch/ses/formations/bachelors/presentation.html

If I can  be of any help, pls do not hesitate.

Hasta la vista!

Hi.

I don't know what you have written recently, but if you are talking about wanting to work in the UN primarily, my best advise to work elsewhere for a few years to get the expertise you need to get back to the UN later as a non-intern, and keep the contacts you have now warm in the meanwhile.

Getting a job in the UN -- or any of the international organizations --has much less to do with expertise than contacts and support from your country.

Try to attend as many networking events as possible, especially those connected to your country's mission in Geneva as well as any university networks.

Webster is more or less a joke. You pay money, you get in, and they give you your degree. The actual quality of the courses, and the level of difficulty, are not what it should be.

Keep applying...for many positions in/around HR and you'll get something.
